Build engine wont go over 4000 rpm's :(
 
This year it seams to be "the" year of problems for me. The L is not functioning as well as I was hoping for and I don't know what the problems are.

We got a new diablo flip chip from JLP since the old one was probably running a bit lean (heard pinging). But when I installed the new chip I managed to blow a plug in the first race of the year. This is now taken care of (thanx JLP). But the truck is acting weird. It won't go over 4000 rpms, and the truck is unstable. It shakes and makes weird noises, and it totally shuts down (engine shut down, lights stop working etc, and it backfires)
I talked to Johnny about it and he said that it's 100% chip related, and that I probably haven't put the chip in correctly (or all the way).

This is a flip chip and I have one bright red light, and two not so bright green lights. When I backfire, the KB spits out oil in the engine room (damn).

But I have tried all I can to put the chip in correctly, taking it out and in 10 times, and changed to the old chip, but it's still not working well. It feels like im loosing all power around 4000 rpm's.

Can you guys help me?? Do you have a "list" I can go through for finding the error? Could this be a plug related issue? Could it be a vacuum line issue??

I'm getting kind of desperate over here :confused:

if you had to swap the head, did you make sure the cams are timed right?

Wow sorry to here Norseman, this sucks :(

I saw you blow the plug in the Vid, (bummer on that) @^%(@^$%$@
you then what ? bought a build small block ? long block ?
new heads ? re-did head ?
WHO SET THE CAMS ?
Does it run good up to 4K ?
Did this issue happen day one when you started the built motor ?

If you tried NO CHIP and old chip and it still spits, backfires through the intake, shakes rattles and stalls, I'd guess on the cams being set wrong.
(The spitting part is scary, be careful untill you figure it out)

I have heard of "new" KB owners complain of the no power in the upper RPM's when they first bolt it on and ARE NOT re-tuned for the KB yet, and use the old Program. I assume you are tuned for the KB, and of course Johnny's a master on that so that shouldn't be an issue.

If the prob's there with new chip, old chip, and no chip, I'd have to say the Cam timing is the first place to look, I HOPE I'M WRONG, but spitting and back firing is generally associated with timing, and or ignition.

BTW
Where the hell is the oil coming from thats being spit out the KB ???

The L is professionally build by JLP in 2003, and made amazing 575 rwhp on pump gas. And it has been acting very well since then, except that we heard some pinging on the strip on high speeds and high rpms (therefore we got a new chip)

We did not swap the heads. Just put in bigger inserts and locktite and a new coil pack (all from JLP). So I dont think the cams was messed up. The "old" chip runs to about 4400 rpms and the new one goes to about 4000 rpms before the above mentioned happens. It runs nicely up to those rpms. But this didn't happend right after the new chip and plug was installed. I made some races (1/8th) and it worked fine (bad traction over here so I managed 8.6 sec), and it went over those 4000 rpms. But sometimes it just shuts down. And now I doesn't go over those rpms.

Could it be that the new plug is not working? I didn't "install" the plug myself.

Ok so this is good then and all I can say about my above post is
NEVER MIND :lol:

I may be able to save you some trouble, this sounds almost like something Chris went through for quite a while and just figured it out
is ran great up to about where your does and then would studder make weird sounds and or stall, (he would also lose lights, get the - - - - - of death on the dash board, coast to the side, put it in park and then start over. If he kept under 4K he could drive it to the end of the world and back, get it over 4K and wam

He and EVERYONE also assumed it to be the chip and or computer.
After trying diff chips, diff tunes, diff tuners, getting the computer checked by ford, new Batt, new Alt, wiring checked, changed exhaust (trouble happen to start after he did original exhaust), and many other things tried over the course of many months. TROUBLE TURNED OUT TO BE, ---> Bad Coil

Would work fine under 4K, computer and ignition was tested by Ford "twice" and giving a clean bill of health, but after him begging them to data logging it during a test drive, they finally did and when they allowed it to go over 4K wam it did it and threw a quick code about that cylinder not firing, they changed that coil, trouble is all gone and running perfect now.
(under 4K, the truck didn't skip a beat)

Maybe you can borrow some coils and give it a try ???

Johnny send us two coil packs. We need to change it and see if we will get the same reaction. If that is the problem, I would be the happiest norwegian viking around.

Edit: damn, he send us only 1 coil pack. We need to borrow from somebody.

Please do not tell me that JLP used Loctite on the plug and insert on the head. Can you clearify what the above sentence meant. :coffee:

Joe, as far as I understood it (but I don't want to get arrested by this :rolleyes: ), Johnny uses inserts in the ported heads because the aluminium heads only have 3 threads or something (prior 2003). Thats why he uses steel inserts with 8 threads. Loctite is on the insert, and not on the plugs as far as I know. :)

Norseman, thanks for the clarification. I didn't want to lose any respect for JLP, and was hoping you weren't saying that he loctite's his plugs. I (and others) have already had to beat up the uneducated on Stangnet for this practice.

That is why I follow a "buy" strategy and not a "make" strategy. It's best to leave it up to the professionals. :lol:

also check the plugs for proper gap, you may be seeing spark blow out over 4000rpms.
