The worst sparkplug you've ever seen?

Uh, so I'm a little worried. This the the first plug from the driver's side of my '01. The truck appeared to be unmodded when I bought it 2 months ago, I checked out the lower pulley bolt and the snout pulley, both appear to be untouched/unmarred. Since I've owned the truck I've put on a MAC hot air intake and MAC catback, and I ran the stock Predator perf. tune for a few days, then switched to the 10%+ fuel and 10%- timing because I thought I heard a slight ping once when I was really getting on it passing a concrete barrier on the highway.

It's not the best picture, but you get the idea. There's a big growth of white hanging off one side of the ground.

They appear to have been in there all 33,000mi of the truck's life, the electrode is all worn down on all of them and there is paint on the top of each plug. Green on the passenger side and white on the driver side. This is the only plug that looked like this, the other ones were a mixture of either all tan, or half tan, half kind-of white. Nothing like this though.

Tell me it's not something serious, maybe just a clogged fuel filter? I bought the filter and tool to take the old one off tonight, I'm going to change it out before I drive it again.

I forgot to mention, I put some NGK TR6IX's in there for the replacement, I did take it for a quick spin around the block and the difference in throttle response is pretty amazing.

I've seen them completely melted and still running.

Am I blowing this out of proportion? Should I be worried about the state of my engine's health?

kerno Apr 8, 2005 02:34 AM

What brand and number were the plugs that came out?

AZ fun Apr 8, 2005 03:22 AM

I would get rid of that stock predator tune. That right there will cause you problems right away.

The usual leaner Cylinders for a L are the back two on the Drivers Side, although I have melted others

I don't know why I didn't mention this in my first post but it's been running on the Ford factory program for about a week already now. I'm preparing for a pulley and RWTD tune so I put it back to stock. The plugs were a part of this prep too.

I brought my camera and the plugs to work, I was just about to get a picture of them and the battery in the damn camera died. I'll put them up after work but they're not anything like this one. Half are tan and the rest are a mix of white/tan. None of them are crusty or growing things on them like this one was.

It designates their Iridium line of plugs.

Alright, so the game plan is to change the fuel filter tonight after work, run some fuel injector cleaner through a fresh tank of Chevron 93, and check up on the plugs when I'm putting the pulley on 'er in a couple of weekends from now.

Those of you that have posted pictures that make my plug look healthy in comparison, are those engines still with you? Or are all of those what you all found when you pulled the plugs after blowing up?

Rob_02Lightning Apr 8, 2005 09:51 AM

YES, mine was fine after it. I did that back in the summer of 02,
Raced the schitt out of the rest of that season, all of 03 and 04. Motor came out in winter of 04 and it was still running stronger and faster than ever before. Same motor is now built and back in using the original heads, cams, + block.

Sounds like a bad coilpack to me. Have them all checked out.
Probabaly wouldn't be a bad idea to swap out the fuel filter too.

That's amazing, great to hear.

I don't know, this plug was a pretty bad sign for my Cobra.
