4.10's Pros/Cons, Slick Size Rpm Difference/ Mileage diff.

Yes I searched, but particularities weren't found.

I noticed NEAL said he gained MPG by switching to4.10's.
HANKFAN noticed about a 300 rpm increase at cruising speed when he switched from 3.55 to 4.10's.

This is what I want to know.

Right now my '99 L puts down 435/522 with a conservative street tune. If I swap out the 3.55 for 4.10's what size slicks should I run? I am currently using a 28" Hoosier slick and I do NOT have a traction issue at all.

At what RPM do you cross the line with 4.10 gears and what tire size are you using? Also how much power are you making?

I'd like to find someone who has close to my power running 28" slicks and see what RPM they cross the line at.

I've read that you'll get sick of the 4.10's after a while. WHY? I drive my truck about 4-5000 miles per year, and I want to enjoy it.

I can get a KILLER deal on the gears and install so the price is the same if I go to 3.73 or 4.10 gears...

Also, besides the Odometer and speedometer being off, is there any reason to get a chip reburn? The computer will be reading the speedo wrong, will this affect the way the truck runs?

Lastly, How is street driving on Stock F1's in the summer?

I can only tell you about street driving on Toyo's. My '00 has the 4:10 set-up and love it! I have a very conservative tune with only a Borla Ex. and a K&N filter - the truck runs great, speedo was taken care of by the chip and I wouldn't consider switching back to the 3:55's. The truck is a lot snappier off the bottom, cruises 75 @ 2500 RPM and is just a great all around package. Nearest track to me is about 60 miles away and I haven't had the time to run it for ET's yet (owned it since last Jan.)

With 4.10's and 28" slicks you will turn 5400 rpm @110, add or subtract 100 rpm for every 2 mph from there. So, 5700 rpm will go 116 mph and 5200 will go 106.

I'm only making about 380 actual rwhp (5,600 ft altitude kills hp), and on a poor to maybe OK track do have traction issues on Hoosier 18 x10 x 16 slicks. On the street, F1's.... forget it. Smoky fun.

Mark, stay with 3.73's. I did not see any big benefit to the 4:10's, except it was harder to get traction out of the hole.

Thanks guys..

Anyone else post thier thoughts or observations? I'm leaning more towards 4.10 than 3.73.

All I know is these 3.55 gears have to go.

I watched him pretty closely last fall from the fence line. His truck just did'nt come alive til about the 60ft mark. I think with your conservative tune you ought to give the 4.10s a try l-menace.

Besides.. I'm tired of seeing you fade away in my rearview. Come on man! Give me something to compete with!

I have been running 4.10's on the street now for quite sometime and love them. Really made a big difference in the overall fun factor on the street. I know 1BADTRK posted that he gained 2 tenths in the 1/8 by switiching from 3.55's to 4.10's. Definately a worth while mod for a weekend street truck. Nothing like a controled power slide at 60 mph!!!!

4.10's will help ur city mpg but not ur highway mpg due to fact at 70mph in OD ur doing about 300-500moreRPM then with ur 3.55 rear end. now u may see an improvement due to ur tune and when ur power curve starts. due to all of neals intake mods and such his power band is around that area so yeh he saw a gain when going with 4.10's

IMO there is not enough difference to warrant going from 3.55's to 3.73's.

That's why I'd try the 4.10's if I were in your shoes. Again, if the 4.10 gear is a little steep, an inch or so taller on the tire will bring you back down to the equivalent of 3.73's.

I agree with HANKFAN.....had the 4.10s for 4 years (at least)

I get 15mpg at 80/85 cruise speed.

With the 29.5" Hoosiers I am good to 122 mph

You will have to change your chip either with the 4.19s or 3.73s, if not, your shifts points will be out of whack

I think JDM has the FMS 4.10s...Lightning Bob may have a set of the FMS as well.
