Prep for powdercoating Lightning wheels ?

Does anyone know if the silver on the 2000 Lightning wheels is paint or powdercoat ? My powdercoater will not take them if they have been powdercoated already, he says it's too difficult to remove. But if it's just paint, I'm good to go.

Thanks for your help.

I've had 3 sets of L wheels powdercoated, they are painted stock.

Can you give me a pointer on gloss or semi-gloss black ?

Thanks again.

do you mean like which color to choose? if thats what you're asking, i really like the full glossy black. they only look good though if you clean them at least once a week.. and you will need some tire-shine to keep them looking good

Birdy,

I like your wheels in the pic in your sig. I've been thinking about powdercoating mine as well, but was wondering about the center caps since they are plastic. What did you do for yours, paint?

Thanks,
Greg

P.S. Not trying to hijack this thread... just figured it was a relevant question to powdercoating.

Two things ...

1. Plastic blasting is the only way to clean the paint
off our wheels to prep for powder coating.

2. Make sure he hangs them horizontal to spray and
don't bake at a temp higher than about 300 degrees.

Yeah, painting is the only option on the plastic center caps.

yeah i painted the centers... stuck some masking tape around the SVT logo/black circle in the very middle, sanded the rest of them down by hand (mine used to be chrome) to get a nice abraisive surface, then 4 coats of gloss black, and 3 coats of clear, because i dont want to have to repaint them every year or so

Hi Birdy,

No, no specs or pics in my sig, but there is some info on www.dynopro.com along with a few pics.

It's basically a '90 coupe that has a 408 windsor with a mondo j-trim vortech blowing through a demon carb in a vortech box. It has iron Dart Sr. heads, vic jr intake (both are ported by a friend) and is a far simpler combo than most would imagine. I've got hundreds of pics of the build if you want more info or pics.

Take care,
Greg
