Here's a pic of my Pioneer AVXP7300.

This model is outdated now, but I'm sure the next generation is pretty much the same. DVD/CD player is incorporated in the dash unit and it has a seperate "brain" unit that controls pretty much all functions. Only problem is there is a safety switch that will not allow the screen to display a picture without the parking brake engaged. That is the only legal way the manufacturers can sell these. This is easily bypassed, though.

Coolest thing I figured out is with this unit (and I'm sure others can do this too) is I can plug my digital camcorder in and view what the camera is recording on my in-dash screen just like looking through the viewfinder.

I don't know how long you're going to wait until buying, but I just bought an Alpine IVA-D901, however it won't be installed for about 5 or 6 weeks when my truck gets here. For what it's worth, I originally wanted the N-1, but got a brand new 901 for half price. Good luck, it's a cool machine too!

Take a look at Eclipse

http://www.eclipse-web.com/

The AVX 2494 unit fits in the dash.

Eclipse actually makes a unit that fills the entire space in our dash..you have to dremal the dash a little but it works great....its the only unit I have seen that has a CD drive and a DVD navigation/movie drive.

You can play music while you watch a movie, or while you use the DVD GPS function.....the screen adjusts for tilt/angle but does not hide itself....its all touch screen...which I dont like, but my buddy's doesnt get finger prints on it for some reason.... its grease proof or something...I think its by far the coolest model out there.

I will see if I can find the model number....I lost the link I had saved

That was done from the gitgo! I wouldn't buy a stereo like this and not be able to use it!

Driver charged with Murder

Not to sound like 'mommy' here, but I'd be careful about overriding the emergency brake safety feature on the indash screens.

There is currently a lawsuit up in Alaska where a driver of a vehicle with an indash screen is being charged with murder. Apparently got in an accident because of watching a DVD. Accident killed the other driver.

FYI

Not too smart to watch DVD and drive at the sme time.

I have the new Kenwood KVT-915 and could not be happier. It is a top notch unit that has everything included. TV, DVD player, CD player, and tuner all in dash. Check out Kenwood's site or search for one on Ebay, it is a great unit.

He was found not guilty. There are no laws that says you can't have a DVD player mounted on your dash. There was no proof it was even on. I think I read about it yesterday in the news.

If anyone is interested, here is the link to the news story.

If you do a search for "Dashboard DVD" from the above link, you can read the rest of the related news stories to the case.

here is my Pioneer setup... it's "outdated", because its over a year old.

but the new one is pretty sweet. newest version has touch screen (which is nice because my remote is always flying behind the seat or into the floorboard and is generally a pain to keep up with under hard accelerating and braking), the new one also has a built in accelerometer (like a g-tech) among other neat features.

I've never been a big Pioneer fan, but the stuff is pretty nice.

just my .02

I have the Pioneer 7500. Its over a year old also, but is a great piece. I like the 7" screen over the smaller ones, and I'd wait for Pioneer to come out with a 7" version of the AVIC-N1. The AVI is an incredible piece for the price. To have all that stuff built in is great. I hope within a few years that the upgrade to the AVIC-N1 will have a 7" screen, Satelite radio built in, and all the stuff that is in the current model thats when I will upgrade my unit.
