With the KB I decided to go back to LT's/cats. I removed and sold the last ones I had because of the noise inside the truck. I do not want to give up on them again. I run the Bassani cat-back which was great before the headers and cats. Now the interior noise is too much. I have a few ideas I'll be trying in the next day or two. Just wondered if anyone else had tried something that really helped, or do you all like it "the louder the better!"

check out www.b-quiet.com they have several options that you can install.

 

a layer of brown bread over the entire rear area and inside the door panels helped quite a bit. The floorboard will further improve noise transfer. (dynamat clone) helped quite a bit in my truck... I plan on experimenting with longer dual mufflers to see if that makes any difference or not. I like the power of the KB and LTs/midpipes, but I agree -- it is too loud in the cabin

 

Thanks. I bought a couple different materials from them when I had the LT's before on the truck. I tried some on the rear vertical wall behind the seats (there is no insulation there at all) and it made no difference I could tell. I did not strip the interior to try it on the floor. The sound felt like it was coming through the rear panel as the mufflers are just behind that.

I still have it, although I was saving it for my twin turbo project.

when I first started reading, I thought this was a joke.

I was picturing somebody squishing that bread you get at Outback Steakhouse all over the insides of their truck.


I had never heard of this "brown bread" product.

anyway, I have LTs w/ cats and all that and I'm not sure what you guys are talking about.

it sounds fine to me. and I don't consider myself to be one of those "louder is better guys".

Every morning I take my son to school. I cringe for the first few miles as the tone in the cab is really annoying at several different rpms. After driving for 30 minutes or so it seems better, undoubtably because I've gotten used to it. It always seems worse when I first start driving.

Put it this way, on my truck you'd have to have the radio very loud to be louder than the exhaust note in the cab. And it's worse with the windows up, almost like pressure in the cab on your ears. I love power and speed, but not too thrilled with noise. I'll re-post if tomorrows experiment helps.

I don't mind if it's loud outside the truck, but it doesn't seem to be. It's inside the truck that drives me nuts, and this is my true daily driver.

i have just the magnaflow catback, and it makes a nice decent exhaust note. at idle it sounds a little louder than stock, its like you can hear the motor better. when using more torque at the lower rpm bands, from around 2600 to 3600 it is deep and growly. almost too much. but when i start getting the revs up it drowns out;on the highway i can still think without losing my mind. but unless i put my radio on real loud (still stock) i cant really hear it crusing around town. highway its all good. but i like louder (not obnoxiously loud) exhaust systems....sure is fun going into parking garages and just driving around counting how many mini van cheap-o alarms go off....take that soccer moms!!

 

on the 99 trucks there are to vents behind the seats that i think have something to do with cabin pressure when you close the doors.i closed them both off and it helped get the noise down quite a bit.hey,if it doesnt work just uncover them.

 

those vents are important! I covered the one on the passenger side but poked a moderate hole in it. I left the driver side one alone. Imagine your airbags going off and the air having nowhere to go... I believe your eardrums would suffer.

b-quiet also has sound deadening mat. I installed a sheet of that inside the plastic trim that goes up agains the rear. That added to the effectiveness of the brown bread.

I've got two 18" stainless cans to weld in place of the 2 14" that came with the silver bullet. I'm hoping that will help some.... If it doesn't, I might just put a full magnaflow catback on it and see what happens...

 

Thanks guys. So I'm glad to know that it just isn't me! I will do the sound deadening if tomorrows deal doesn't work.

Not sure how much the Sound deadening will cost BUT it might be cheaper to trade the bassani for a milder cat back

I run LT's and high flow cats and a single magnaflow and its not nearly as loud as you describe

The single magnaflow is the key, that muffler has a much softer sound than two singles.

If you think your noise is bad.....try it without cats on a 3" system.

I now have a big big Magnaflow single dual 3" that is going on my truck next.

I had the single Magnaflow with X pipe with my first set of LT's/cats; I thought it was even louder! Maybe it's just me!

We're probably talking about two different mufflers. The one that I have experience with and am putting back on my truck is listed in the motor home section of the catalog.....the body of the muffler is 22" long with dual 3" in/out. I hope it works cause I don't like attracting this much attention if you know what I mean.

Please post your thoughts when you get that muffler on there. The single internal X muffler I had was not that big; got it from REM.
