SRT's in Taylor Texas
 

A friend of mine called me on Wed. telling me about this new Dodge that was going to kick my L's ass. He was at a BBQ place in Taylor Tx. eating lunch and six SRT's pulled in the parking lot. Three reds and three silvers. He talked to the guy's and told them he had a friend (me) that had an L. The Dodge guy's told him the SRT was going to eat the L for lunch. I told him great I'll see them at the road course. When I was at TWS at the driving school the guy's in the Vipers were not impressed at all with their cars on the road course! If my truck can out handle a Viper in the twisties it will have no trouble with this POS.
Why would they be in Texas?

Chrysler does quite a bit of road testing of their vehicles in Texas. There facility is headquarted in Corpus Christi. I typically see all sorts of new cars on I-37 and in/around Corpus before they've been released. I saw several of the new Vipers and the new SL600 last summer. On my last trip to Corpus, I saw that new 300M replacement along with the wagon version heavily camo'd.

I reject the premise, Jerry. YOU apparently can outhandle certain Viper drivers, but, other things being equal, a Viper will stomp a Lightning on any race track around -- drag, road course, autocross, you name it.

The Viper is lighter, lower, has more tire and more engine. It's really not even a fair fight.

Tim, I'm sure you are correct but I'm just telling you what happened to me. A few Vipers were in my run group and they were all saying how poorly the Viper handles. They said they were disapointed! Maybe they were just pissed that a truck had passed them. I just assumed the Vipers must not handle very well. As I said, I can only relate what I saw. Since I was in the second to the slowest run group (this was my first driving school and since my son and I were both driving the L they put me in the Blue group and my son in the green) maybe if I had been with better drivers I would have had my ass handed to me!

the viper's not an easy car to drive fast. Up until 2001 they didn't have ABS, which is a good thing for a good driver, but a really bad thing for a poor to average one. They have massive torque and power which contributes to power oversteer. again a good thing for some drivers, really bad for others. the viper also evolved greatly between '92 and '02 and the early years suffered from *relatively* poor suspension tuning and braking.
Comparatively, the Lightning is actually very easy to drive fast. I've found it to be very progressive in its handling and it gives plenty of warning before something drastic happens (on dry pavement).
And, if you havent driven a road course on stock brakes vs. those wilwoods you have you have no idea what mushy means :D :D

I think not on the Dragstrip....There was a # of Vipers at the track last weekend. It seems like they need a better tire for launching or be willing to sacrifice their clutch.

There was a very cool Viper there that was his first time at a dragstrip with that car. Ran 10.4s with a 60 ft somewhere around 2.0 if I remember correctly. He had ran at the Salt Flats at 247 mph. Weighed over 5000 # with 1500 hp.

I was at the Louie Muellers BBQ in taylor on Wed and we parked an L next to the 6 SRT10's (was also an SRT4 and a viper). When we came out of the BBQ place they had moved the SRT10s away from the lightning, LOL. They wanted nothing to do with us.

They were road testing, but didn't want to road test next to a lightning.

Dodge has had up to 8to10 SRT/10 trucks and a hand full of the new Darango's in the Austin Texas area for about 2 weeks now for media coverage. Motor Trend, Car & Driver, Road & Track, Hot Rod, and more have been in and out of austin putting these new trucks through the tests for media write ups and so on.
I've come across half a dozen sites online w/pics of them on local dynos, staging burnouts at know locations around town, parking lot pics, road pics etc etc. I heard they are wrapped up and moving back on to Michigan. (all of them had manf. plates from mich.)
