will slicks improve my et's???

a guy i know says if i buy a set of slicks i won't run any faster

this can't be true can it, i figure with slicks i can at least put the stall converter to good use and get my 60' times down, am i wrong??

DUH

Don't ask your friend about what stocks to buy!
Anyone on here will tell you that slicks can only help. Think about it-you'll actually be able to mash it and not set the tires ablaze.

I wouldn't call him a friend.

i am just trying to settle an argument
my other friend has a 00 lightning and he runs with slicks
on the same day he could do a best of 8.4 at 81 mph with a 1.8 60' he runs a 26 10.5
i ran a 5.06 with my f1's he said if i had slicks i wouldn't be able to pull off a 1.8 60'
we raced each other to
we both spun our 60' times were only two thousandths off
but he ran an 8.8 to my 8.6 but he still says i dont have a chance
the other guy just said don't expect much, but i have a 2400 stall wich i can't use because i will spin like crazy.

Slicks will most definetly help then it's up to you to learn how to use them. don't forget the drive shaft loop! Must have when runing slicks at the track.

I know slicks help, but it takes time to get used to them. Don't expect to instanlly run faster, but once you learn how to launch them you will be faster.

I think the 26" slicks are to short, you need the taller sidewall the 28" slicks offer.

you don't think i could beat the 8.5 first time out? please explain what i might run into launching slicks. thanks

First off it takes a little practice learning how to do do a burnout with slicks. Then sometimes you think OK I have slicks I can just hammer it off the line and you end up going up in smoke. You still have to adjust to track conditions, If the track is margional you may still have to feather the throttle some. If the track is really hooking you can be more agressive off the line and really launch hard. Also slicks can be a little more sensitive to tire pressure than your F1's.

It took me about 10 trips to the track with my slicks to finally get a 1.5 60 foot time out of my slicks. Jim told me at FFW Epping if I didn't get a 1.5 60' time by I would have to buy him dinner. Thankfully I finally did it.

ok say i do get good at it what do you think it will do???
et wise

Lets say you average 1.85 60' times with the F1's

You should be able to run mid to low 1.6 60' times with slicks, so thats at least a 2 tenth reduction in Et's a 2/10th reduction in 60' times could equal 4/10th in a 1/4 mile run. I have never run a 1/8 mile track so it is hard for me to tell you what you would gain in the 1/8th.

I have even seen a few guys do high 1.5 60' times on 28" slicks though I was never able to dip into the 1.5's It took me switching to 30" tall slicks to do it.

hey don how does 2 tenths of a sixty foot give you a better overall by 4 tenths?

ST.ELMO'SFIRE Aug 25, 2003 10:17 PM

it seems like i have a hard time getting my 60" times down with the stall it just wants to spin, i am guessing i should be able to get a 1.8 or a 1.9 60' but havent yet any sugestions?

If you can launch at a higher rpm you don't get any bogging off the line and you are in your peek power band much sooner. This can allow you to shift into the higher gears earlier in the run. So depending on the gearing in your vehical you are in 3rd grar sooner and longer durring the run.

I am not saying that 2 tenths will allways get you 4/10th in a 1/4 mile run, but it is possible.

Edit
stock F1's and a 2400 stall converter are a very tricky setup to launch properlly. Also if you do run the F1's lower the psi I see you listed 32 psi in your sig. Try 27 psi

trashguy Aug 25, 2003 10:28 PM

can someone explain why goto 28 or even 30 "
tall slicks over the 26 " ,wouldnt the 26 " lower your gear
ratio and give better outta the hole performance?

:help:

eatoncharged Aug 25, 2003 10:28 PM

that might have to be my next mod
