Lightning ate a BMW thread......
Well if I read correct the guy that raced the lightning had a 330cic which is a big difference in power between the m3.
I have a 2003 m3 and just purchased my stock 01 Lightning about 3 weeks ago. Here is my opinion on this one. Stock m3 vs stock lightning will all depend on the takeoff. Numbers on the m3 are 13.7 but some have said 13.2 is best which I don't know about that. If the lighting don't loose traction on the take off you have one hell of a race!.
As far as the smg goes, it has a launch control feature which I love. It's almost like a trans brake in a sense and havn't lost on a take off yet (mind you havn't raced a lightning). Even a slightly modified Lightning will take a m3 that I can agree to and I ain't saying that just cause this is a ford board
. The m3 is a track car in my opinion. I havn't driven anything that handles as good as that car. It just blows my mind away at the things I have been able to do in that car where other cars wouldn't even handle half as good.
They are two different machines and I love my m3 but put it away now and drive my 01 lightning as a daily driver.
Just a Fyi, 3 months before I bought my lightning I had one pull up and try to race with me but there was traffic. We ran between cars as fast and as safe as we could but could never hit a light next to each other. He had exhaust and a gauge pod and can only assume that he had mods. Point is after seeing and hearing his truck I fell in love and three months later brings me here with my Black 01 Lighting sitting in my drive way. Hope it that was a good little story hehe.

ill ask you this, "why not?!?"
.......its a show car.
As the owner of a 2001 L and a 2003 M5, my advice would be to turn the corner and go the other way if you end up next to an M5. The car is wicked fast stock and just as easy to mod as an L.
I love my lightning, but my M5 will eat up almost anything, especially if there are curves involved. Over 100mph the car is a rocket.
However, I must say I have had many Porche 911s and ZO6's fall victim to both the M5 and the L.
It's amazing how many people still don't have a clue as to how fast either one is.
