A Learning Day at Cecil....
A Learning Day at Cecil....
Well, went to Cecil on Saturday. We had seven Lightnings there and Vinnie showed up with his Cobra. All of our guys got their best except for Kevin White. The best I could get out of his truck was an 11.32. I was hoping to go 11.10's with it. The only change I made since the truck went 11.20's was the install of 4:10 gears. I datalogged all four runs. Air/Fuel was 11.70's, timing was 16 degrees for both the 3:73 11.20 run and the 11.32 run with the 4:10's. I figured I would try the 4:10's since the motor made more power in the higher RPM's. With the 4:10's the truck actually slowed down. Where it lost it's ET was in the first half of the quarter mile, 60 fts stayed the same. But the 1/8 mile time slowed down a full tenth. When a motor is making that much torque it gives you legs. 3:73 will give you a longer stride, where the 4:10's made the truck feel stronger but it just hurt the ET's. Anyway, we are going to be testing a different blower on it Thursday and were putting the 3:73's back in it, and I might even put the 3:55's back in. But for now I'm just going to put the 3:73's back on and test it with the new blower. Great seeing everyone at Cecil.

Thats some good info Jim
I have often thought and told a few people that I felt the 373's were the best all around gear ratio for our trucks. Your testing might just prove that my thinking is right on.
I wish I could have gone to the track this past saturday, but I was just enjoying the new setup in my truck to much to make it down. The motor is running awesome and is allmost broken in, 600 miles on it allready.
Weeeee I am having fun, the new cams rock. Even the idle has improved now that the proccesor has adjusted to the new cams.

I cant wait to hang out with all you "built motor" guys!!! Mine should be done hopefully at the begining of april!!!!(thanx Johnny)!! except im not goin the new blower route... Im sprayin the chit outta my truck HEHEEHEH!!!! This is gonna be one fun year!!!!!!!!!!
Jim, I wonder why some people have installed 4.10's and gained 1-3 tenths then other people swear that they have gained nothing? I know JL is currently running 4.10's but who knows. I just installed my 4.10's and my truck feels a lot stronger in the mid-range but then again how something feels doesn't always equal a reduction in ET.
Hank -- I would definately say it depends on other aspects of the mods and tune, since the gears would have varying effects depending where in the powerband the truck is pulling harder.
It made me laugh when I was at the shop on Sunday and Jim said "Wow, we havn't heard an idle that smooth in a bit now" on my truck because I don't have cams, lol.

4.10's were more then likely gonna be my next mod. Especially since i run the 20's on the street. What you think jim and how long for an install 3-4 hours ?

LMAO. I can picture him saying that.
I think 4.10s are great for lower powered trucks, however, there comes a point in power where it is better to make use of a lower gear to take advantage of the power than using it on revving.
I kinda look at it like the gears on the bike, the low gears for steep hills really have the potential to make for great accelleration, but the higer speed gears may be more usable since you can only accellerate the spin of you legs at a set rate of speed. See what I mean?
I've noticed that with my studded tires on, which give an effective ratio of 3.23 I have been able to inch away from a 99LS1, and with my stock tires (and 3.55 ratio) he seems to be the one inching away (from 85-on up to 125)

It sounds like Cecil was a great time. And there was some new bests set, congratulations to all that got them. I hope to make it to Cecil a few times this year as I have heard good things about the track.
I can't wait to see what Kevins truck does the new blower...
