OUCH. I didn't think it would take that long for someone to leap at the chance Thank for the info.

Matt, it is just a farm quad to ride around the race track and the farm, because I am lazy.

I tow my '90 Mustang LX with mine and you would never even know it's back there.

Does squat a bit though.

My experience wasn't as pleasant. Everyones right about not knowing the trailer is there. However, I was pulling through the Rockies and boosting alot. Fuel pumps said f you in the middle of Utah
This was when it was stock also.

I am only interested in how the suspension holds up to a heavy load. You are looking at maybe 2500 to 3000lbs you are pulling, I am talking 4500 or so, the power was never in question to begin with.

BTW, I like the pictures, I am leaning toward the grey or silver.
Sorry I did not mean to offend you, really. I read the post, that is why I said it. Still though I believe my 03 is okay with 7,700lbs, (God I hope I read that right in my owners manual).

Thanks for the compliment too! I wish the silver was available for 03, that's what I would have got.

I almost always get 14-17mpg(mixed highway, & in town). A best of 19mpg. once (highway). I towed 5400 lbs. 200 miles, and got 14.17mpg. Coming back with empty 2000lb. car trailer at 80mph., I got 13mpg. uphill with headwind.

Our L is sitting outside the house with a 5500lb. RockCrawler Explorer, on a 2000lb. car trailer. The squat is not bad. I have a Reese weight distributing hitch, a new Tekonsha Prodigy trailer brake controller, and new '02 Expy Aluminum 16x7's with 235x70xR16 tires (Bling, Bling)

This is going to be towed 580 miles. I also have alot more vehicles of various sizes and weights, that will make the same towed trip behind the L. I will take pics. of all, and report all fuel mileages. I'll get a pic. of the Explorer tomorrow & post it.

You will not regret it if you decide to go Lightning.

Edit to say> The truck is stock and has 38,500 miles on her.

I towed a 89 Mustang, open trailer, all my spare parts, tools, ect., weighing about 4700#'s. Had it set up for about 425#s of weight on the hitch. Trailer had 4 wheel brakes. I towed with a near stock 99 L, about 20,000 to 25,000 miles of towing, day, night, rain & hail & even one wind & dust storm. Power was never a issue(and my mustang ran in the eight's, 1/4 mile, so I know power). Handling was never a issue. Braking, when the trailer brakes were set up right was straight as a arrow. One time I had to panic stop coming off a interstate ramp. Came to a stop about 10' in back of the cars bumper in front of me, cabin of truck filled with tire smoke. Best damn towing truck made!

'03s have stiffer rear springs. They should squat less than the earlier trucks...

Do it !!! Then you can get a decal for the back of the "L"
that says:

"If you can beat my tow truck, you can race my race car!"

Talking

I'm so happy with the way our L has been towing lately, that I just can't put it into words. Let me just say that she has made 2 towing trips in the last week. The first trip the weather couldn't have been any worse. Miserable snow and ice. We were on the road for 20 hours.

On the first trip, my wife got to tow her 5500lb. RockCrawler Explorer on the 2000lb. car trailer. I got to drive the U-Haul GMC 5500 26' truck, towing our Audi Quattro on the u-haul auto-transport. My wife managed just under 12mpg. for the trip. Keep in mind that she was following me, and the conditions were terrible, thus she never experienced the "L's" true capabilities.

I just got in around 11:30pm. last night, from the second towing trip. A move is not a move, unless you have 11 vehicles. LOL

The weather was great! My trip took the same time with the empty car trailer, as it did loaded.(10hrs.)

The loaded route is 95 south into Vegas. Then over Hoover Dam, and into Kingman Arizona. From Kingman to Flagstaff. Flagstaff to 17 South towards Phoenix. Get off at Camp Verde and head to Payson. Lots of serious hills to climb and decend.

I passed everything between Kingman and Flagstaff. Only big HP big rigs could even come close to running with me. LOL This thing pulled almost all of the hills at, or very close to the speed limit (65-75mph most places). I climbed the slowest hill at 45mph.

Running this hard, I averaged just under 10mpg. I scaled the whole combination in Kingman at the Cat certified truck scales. The total weight 13,630lbs

I'll post pictures today of both trips.

I really had the "L" grin on my face last night. Heehee

Oh, I got revved by one Cobra when I had the empty car trailer in tow. LOL
