Custom wind'shield shade

I have been a little hesitant to show any of the items I have made because alot of people here take it the wrong way . I made this item for my personal truck and will not make another one, so this is not a pitch to sell a item but just to show it off .. Its not all that hard to make. Its a rustic copper color with the running W in the middle I have never put the running W on any item I planned to sell only for myself.

Well... if you're not going to sell them, how do *we* make one. :)

I took the plain window shade one with a fake looking diamond plate on one side and the shinny chrome on the other. I masked it off and spray painted it on the fake looking side it takes paint well . I used the copper colored paint from home depot and antique it . I painted the area where the running W is with a dark brown first then back masked the W and painted the rest after antique I put a few coats of spray clear gloss and let it dry for a day or two so it wouldnt make my truck smell like paint fumes .

Some of you might want to look into this product. It's an "Eclipse" sunshade, and it mounts permanently on the sides of your windshield. Here is one side of it in the "open" position. It folds up accordion style automatically when not being used to sit neatly beside your windshield pillar.

You pull both sides in to the center to close it where they join in the middle with velcro. Here it is closed.

It "sags" just a bit at the top, but that is corrected by folding the visors down against it if needed.

The thing I really like about it is that it is always there, no fumbling around for it in the cabin or trying to find a place to store it. I had one on my old truck and it was like new after almost three years, but then, my vehicles are garaged.

If you're interested, here's where I got mine:

The size for a 2005 F150 King Ranch is Catalog# 14626. (No - I do not get any speciial deals for recommending it). :)

On the link I gave you, there's another link near the top for a .pdf catalog that gives the sizes for cars and trucks up through 2007. Mine was about $42.00, so theiy're not cheap, but hey, if you drive a KR, you're not cheap either. :D

The only thing you have to be careful with in installing these things is to not get the mounting plates (stick-on) too close to the windshield pillars. I'd recommend sort of testing how close you can get BEFORE you remove the adhesive backing for mounting. If you get them too close, you will not be able to reinsert the shades into the mounting plates after you smooth them down to remove air bubbles.

The mounting area on the windshield must be clean of course. I didn't bother using the little pads they supplied and instead used paper towels and 91% isopropyl alcohol for cleaning.

It was about a 10 minute job to put them on.
