Well, I've finally done it.
Well, I've finally done it.
I've been threatening to put a new sound system in my truck eversince I bought it. Yesterday, I made that threat a reality. To replace my factory 5x7's I went with Memphis Sound 5x7's and a 4x50 Memphis amp. To add a little bump to the sound, I got a JL Audio Stealthbox with a downfiring 12w3V2 for the rear console, a 300X1 Memphis amp to push it, and a Memphis capacitor to help out with the power situation. It's all going in this coming Saturday because there just wasn't enough time to get it all in yesterday. I couldn't bring myself to replace the factory head unit just yet as the speaker setup cost me just under 2 grand and I didn't want to go through the trouble of replacing the head unit and the changer as well. But, until I get around to replacing those, I'm having a digital line converter put in so all I'll have to do is run the existing RCA cables to the new HU whenever I put it in. It will take all day Saturday to put in and I'll probably be testing it out the rest of the evening after that. Anyone got any suggestions for some good songs to put it through the wringer? Feel free to post any thoughts you may have about the setup.

Well, if you're looking to see just what your sub can do try a Bass305 CD. They usually have some good high's too, but it's mostly beats and bass lines. You'll have a good idea of how much bass the sub will put out without distortion.
Really a good head unit will push a system more than the stock one. I ran a stock HU in my expi with my orion amp (300wx1) and JL 15w1. It wasn't near as clean and hard hitting at when I had my pioneer HU. The only other thing I can see with your setup is maybe an active/electronic crossover if your sub amp doesn't already block out the highs to the sub. Mine doesn't do that, so the electronic crossover is a must for it. If your sub amp already has a crossover on it, then it's not critical unless you're running mids and tweets which you're not. It just allows more tweaking of the sound. I used to run 4 tweets 4 mids and one or two 15's in my old buick LeSabre. Those were the days.
A good HU will also allow you to tweak your sound more to get the desired effect.

Yea, that's my only real reservation about keeping the stock HU. I'd like to have something with an equalizer. About the crossovers, the amps already have them built in so I'm good there.
Later on down the road I might put a component set in the kickpanels. Most of those nowadays come with crossovers with the set so I'll be good there. Those will probably be gotten when I get the new HU, but for now I think I've spent plenty at one place at one time, heh.
