Been around forums a long time, some of you may know me from other forums. jimbo74 just about everywhere

Picked up a well used 2001 F150 Supercab 4x4 XLT, 5.4L Triton V8, 174k miles, automatic. Has a lift and no muffler. 315/75/16s on it. Motor feels strong, and the interior is pretty clean, has aftermarket headlights, but they are aren't right, so I removed all the halos and extra LEDs, and has a subwoofer with a Pioneer deck, however, I don't like it. It does have the factory cd changer in the center console if that matters? I do have a mismatched wheel, it is the chrome stocker, looks like someone messed one of them up, and didn't replace it. Looking for a matching wheel if anyone has one. It is a Weld Mountain Crusher wheel. I think the rear end needs to come up higher, but it has like 2 blocks? so I don't like that, one block has a bumpstop thing on it, and the other is just a block..... I want to do all spring... Also, gearing is way off, I want to fix that, and also run through all the fluids. nothing is leaking, but there is dry seepage remnants just about everywhere,,,, no wet spots

Welcome to the site! Sounds as if you have a plan laid out for your truck.

So, should I have this be my build thread? or should I post appropriate threads in the other specific forums?

I am having an issue with my speedo being off. Usually, with bigger tires, you are going faster than what my speedometer says, but I am going the opposite... At a real 45 mph, my speedometer says 55 mph, and at a real 75 mph, my speedometer says 90 mph. Truck would not physically go faster than 90 mph, speedometer was all the way past the last number on it, and then some

Does this mean someone regeared my truck?

I need to start going through my fluids, all of them. Just got the FSM set up, so I am going to compile what type of fluids and capacities, and list them out.

also, would like to do front brakes soon, what is the forum favorite here?

What are the forum favorites for everything? Amsoil, Redline, etc?

I believe I have a 4R100 transmission? And a BW 44-06 T-case?

What services should I do?

What capacities of fluids do I need to get?

For the tcase, front and rear ends I want to do a drain and fill. same with tranny, what about a filter, shuold I do the torque converter as well? of course, motor oil is the easy one

will also do a coolant drain and fill

I'm going to recommend to the moderators that your post and this reply be moved to a new thread in the 97-03 section.

Please post the TRANS and AXLE codes that are on the door jamb sticker. That will tell us what gears and transmission came with the truck. TRANS "E" is a 4R100, "U" is a 4R70W. If you have 5 lug wheels, it's extremely unlikely it's a 4R100, if you have 7 lug wheels, it's the 7700 payload package and it MIGHT have a 4R100. The 4R100 pan is shaped like the state of Utah, the 4R70W is pretty much rectangular. If the axle code starts with a letter, you have limited slip, if it starts with a number, it's open. The second number indicates ratio. Example: H9 is 3.55 LS, 19 is 3.55 open.

How to calculate actual gear ratio:

http://www.how-to-build-hotrods.com/gear-ratio.html

Capacities and fluid specs are in the owner's manual:

https://www.fleet.ford.com/partsands...owner-manuals/

Torque converter should have a drain plug unless it's a later model transmission. Reuse the pan gasket unless it's damaged.

ok, looks like I have an lsd with a 3.55 ratio -- unless it was changed -- not sure as the speedo is off, but the opposite of the way it should be... usually it shows slower than the actual speed with larger tires

4r70w trans

what size is the rear differential? what about the front?

I am a little upset they downgraded to 16s

Rear is most likely 9.75", front is 8.8" reverse cut. The 8.8" rear has a fill plug in the cover, the 9.75" fill plug is on the front side.

Use my link to calculate your actual gear ratio. Whatever gears and tires you have, you will need a programmer to fix the speedometer.

tranny needs mercon V (I should have the 4r70w) same for torque converter?
Of course, it isn't filled separately. The transfer case now specifies Ford XL-12 (or compatible) fluid.

for the torque converter, is it recommended to get a flush done? or is that not the right way to do it? For the transmission, I was planning a pan drop and filter replace

which tuner should I get specifically for my truck? I know several have said SCT, but what model tuner? Also, as I currently don't have a custom tuner shop, what can I do about tunes? or are there tunes pre-loaded?

I haven't scoped out my actual rear end gears yet, going to try and do that soon

Also, looking into front brakes right now, these need to get done sooner than later. I have been browsing the Tirerack forum here, but really haven't seen what most people recommend, just issues with tires and wheels.

Drop the pan, drain the torque converter by removing its drain plug.

https://www.f150online.com/forums/ch...unes-read.html

Any current SCT device would be fine, buy it and custom tunes from one of the good online tuning shops such as MPT or 5Star. The programmer will come with canned tunes, the shop will write custom tunes after you fill out a questionnaire and email them to you.

I personally use Centric premium rotors and ceramic pads. Others here have different opinions. I got 115k miles out of my last set of fronts.

should I buy the tuner from MPT or 5Star? What model SCT tuner?

as for the brake rotors and pads, I have actually seen kits from stoptech? drilled, slotted, etc? Hawk pads? anything else? I do drive aggressively, and I also am sitting on 35s, so there is more weight than stock. I will also soon sometimes have a dirt bike or haul stuff as well

ok, so I think I want the sct x4 7015? looking on eay, and it has to be un married? or how does that work?

looked into MPT, and they don't seem to have anything for a 2001. I sent them an email. Looking into 5star right now

How is the tc drained? will it drain with the pan drop?

I still can't find the full procedure for it, trying to search now though....
I did buy a DVD off of ebay that says it is the Factory FSM, each page has an underlying watermark that says Ford Motor Company underneath it, and is from Bishko?

how do the factory front hubs work? are they just always engaged? or vacuum operated or?

20 qts of coolant

6 qts of 5w-20 motor oil

14 qts of mercon V for tranny

1.5 qts of mercon for transfer case (but was mentioned earlier that now replaced with xl-12)

3.6 pints of 75w-90 for front diff

5.5-5.8 pints 75w-140 with 4 or 8 oz ? of friction modifier for rear diff

dot 3 brake fluid (amount ?)

so.... I jacked up the rear end.... 4.5 turns of the driveshaft for 1 tire rotation...... DOES THAT MEAN I HAVE 4.56 GEARS?!!!!!!!!

that may explain why my top speed is 90 mph, even though my speedometer is showing 110+ mph

NO.

Drop the pan, drain the torque converter by removing its drain plug.
Remove the dust cover under the bellhousing, turn the engine over till you see the plug.

You probably do have 4.56's. You need a programmer.

Front hubs are solid. There is a differential lock that operates with the 2wd/4wd selector.
