Doing a retrofit. Lens size and a few other Q's

I have a 2001 F-150 Supercrew 5.8 and have been wanting to add an HID system into it for a while now. I did a lot of reading and found that I would need to perform a retrofit in order to get the best visibility of the light without blinding others on the road. I'm wanting to keep my my stock headlights and preform the retrofit to them, but will the "cut/line" pattern of the headlamp hinder the visibility of the light? Would I have better output with clear headlights? Also, I'm looking to use the popular FX-R lenses but wanted to know if I can go bigger and if so, which ones would fit? I've also decided to go with a hid system @ 4300k if that is any help for advice. Looking forward to your responses.

Yes, you would have to buy an aftermarket headlamp with a clear lens. The fluted lens of our stock lamps will diffract the light coming out of the projector. Aftermarket lenses will also be easier to open.

The FX-R is a 2.5" projector. If you want bigger, you can check out the E-55 which is a 3.0" projector.

Just the answers I was looking for Thanks for your help.

It isn't listed on the site, but TRS offers the FXR in a 3" lens which is probably a more proportional option for the F150. Just email them for the 3" version.

I've never seen that, cool!

Thanks for that mSaLL150. Will look into it. The E55 look good, but require a shroud extension (not sure if they can be bought or have to be made). If the FX-R with the 3" lens requires no shroud extension, then I think I will most likely go with that.

They all require shrouds if you want to cover the ugly bits underneath

I'm halfway through doing FXRs in clear lightning style lights....

Oh yeah, I was aware that the projectors required shrouds but the shroud extension looks as though it is a piece of metal to fill the gap for the E55 projectors like in this picture:

I'm assuming since the FXR are sealed they don't require the shroud extension, correct?
I also just received an email from TRS and the price for the 3" version of the FXR projectors is the same as the 2.5" :woot: Going to place my order after a bit more research.

@ Patman, that is the type of headlight I plan to do my retrofit in as well. Would love to see how it came out when when you're finished.
