Clunky A/C ?
Clunky A/C ?
Hi All
Started my truck up for the first time in 3 days, after idling for about 5 seconds, flip on the a/c coz it's hot out - and a rather disturbing clunk sounds from under the hood - almost under the passenger side.
Coulndn't get it to do it again with the gf trying it on and off - any suggestions on what it might be? Sounds like something needs to be tightened.
TIA

Oh, you're screwed! That's the sound of a $2,000 repair job...
Actually, it's normal. It happens to me all the time. What's happening is the compressor is mounted really low and the lubricating oil pools down at the compressor. The Thunk that you hear is the slug of oil being pushed thru the compressor. It causes a momentary strain. Once the oil circulates, it won't make that sound for the rest of the day.
In some trucks, the thunking happens overnight. In others, it takes two days of not running for it to happen.

My 99 Expy 5.4 will make that clunk when it has not been run for a week or more. I have found that by shutting the AC off, starting the truck, letting the rpm's stabilize down, and starting the AC at the lowest idle in gear, it either doesn't do it, or is so much quieter, I don't hear it. Either way, makes me feel better.
