Back-Up Camera Installation!

Well I made an easy 100 bucks yesterday, and figured this would be a good purchase. Lately the bed of my truck is full, so i can't use my rearview mirror.

so i went out and bought this from circuit city.

installation was a breeze, mounting it was actually the hard part.

anyway, heres some pictures!

I ran the wire through a grommet in the firewall, from the head unit through the grommet along the frame into the rear taillight housing. i tapped into the reverse light and viola! mounted it and i now have a backup camera.

the camera comes with all the mounting and necessary wiring, the video/audio cord is about 20 ft long and was more than enough for my little truck.

hope this gives you guys an idea of what to buy. it should work with any double din headunit or screen. as long as it has a camera feature.

Nice set up! Just a question though. The picture you posted of the back bumper with the camera mounted looking at the trailer hitch. The camera is to the left side of hitch so on the drivers side.Looking at the picture you took of the monitor the trailer hitch ball is on the right corner of the screen. What's up with that?

this is hard to put into words but im going to try lol

the camera is on the left side of the hitch at the back, so when i look at my screen its too the right. so it makes me feel like i can back my truck up straighter, if the hitch was on the left of the screen it would make me feel like i would be turning all the time. that make sense?
its a mirror image, and it can be flipped around really easily. either through my head unit or a blue wire in the back. ill get more pictures to try and explain a little better

the camera was about 108 after tax.

they had four or five left in stock at my circuit city. go check, if not they could always order you one.

BTW what type of HU do you have? there is a back up camera at target that mounts to your license plate that could be alot easier to install, but the av cord may not mount up to your head unit. either way, that one comes with a display, in case it wouldnt work. it really boils down to your preference. my camera is very sturdy and waterproof. and just feels like its a good tough camera. the license plate felt really cheap, but then again i couldnt be for sure.

best bet would be to pull your unit and look at the camera connection. this camera has a microphone built in, so it is a white rca cable for audio and yellow for video feed.

the one i mentioned earlier that mounted to the license plate is an 1/8th inch plug, similar to a plug that would fit in a headphone jack.

That seems like a pretty good price. Ive certainly seen cameras for cheaper, but I have NO way of knowing if they work well at all. So for $108 and having someone say the thing works, I think im gonna check into that.

I've seen that one at target and it looks kinda cheesy to me. I have an in-dash dvd player (JVC *&#$ blah blah... I have no idea, it looks kool, works great and plays movies) with the plug for a camera, Ive just been waiting to find some info on a cam that I know for sure will work decent.

Not sure if yours is the same, but if I wire mine up to have the camera get its power from the break light circuit, then whenever I go into reverse the screen will switch to the cam regardless of whats on the screen at the time. They might all be that way though.

Thanks for the knowlege so far. Im gonna check Circuit City here, if they dont have any, then you'll just have to go to yours and grab me one

Just so ya'll know, we carry that same thing at best buy too

I've installed a few of these things. They are pretty sturdy. One went in a horse trailer to a seperate video screen on the dash of a super duty, and a couple of other ones went into a couple trucks for the company PODS. The back up cameras went into the video feed of a Garmin Nuvi 5000 GPS. Pretty kickass little set up.

Im thinking about getting the licsence plate one and modding it a lil bit so that i can still use a normal liscense plate frame with it.
