Talking My 02HD custom sub box :)

Well, finally finished my sub project. I didn't want to spend that much money in the JL box so I did my own. I'm posting here for the benefit of the HD owners. I spent 4 hours just measuring. I was sure the rear console was big enough for a 1 cf box. My goal was to use the outer shell without cutting anything so I could go back to stock and to build a rectangular box (a lot easier!). It was totally posible. At the end, to finish it faster, I just trimmed a little the lower inner plastic ribs (used for alignment) and eliminated two screw tabs. Still with those mods I can rebuild it back to stock and no one will notice anything (everything is covered). I used 3/4" MDF and ended up with a 0.98 cf box. My sub required 0.88 cf so I was ok even with the 0.06 cf basket volume. Lid opens and closes just like stock. It will rise the console a little just like the JL but it feels just fine when resting the arm on it. Sound is awesome! Sub is a Polk DX12 driven by a MTX6500D mono amp. HU is stock. Pics are in my other site gallery under sub album. Link is below. Hope you like it

Looks great! Have you noticed any rattling between your lid and the sides? Since I didn't cut up the inside of my console like JL wanted, I had a gap there. Sure enough, it rattled. $1.50 worth of weather stripping from home depot solved that.

Looks good

Do you have any drawings on while you were planning it?
When you said trimming, I can't really tell which areas you trimmed. Could you explain a little more please...

St Louis Lightning; I was playing it loud today and at some frequencies there is some of it. I need to check where and do the same thing.

chesterc; Is hard to explain without a picture unless you have seen the shell inside. In my pics you can see a tab for a screw in the top of the sub (pic with lid open). I cut two of those but you can cut some ***** in the box to avoid that (I was lazy). Also below those there are four perpendicular plastic tabs about 1" tall that align the shell with the inner stock frame. Those I trimmed about 1/4". Like I said before, the stock box can be built back and no one will notice because all this is covered by the top bucket (the one that you can see).

What are the dimensions for this box?
Is that a 10 or 12?

Sorry for the numerous questions...

That's a 12". I don't have the dimensions with me (at work) but if I remember right the bottom is 17"x12.5". I have all the measurements for brackets and all. There are 8 wood pieces and 3 brackets. Material cost should be less than $30. I'll try to make a drawing with all the specs. I think that would be my best contribution to the HD community
