Question HD vs. L 5.4L Internals

I've asked this a couple times in other threads relating to the engine itself but gotten no solid answer.

Are the short blocks of HDs and Ls REALLY the same???

DropTop said when he ordered his short block that they had different part numbers, but I've been unable to find these part numbers on the internet in the small amout of searching I've done.

I once compared the two trucks on Ford's website and the engine specs (compression, etc.) were slightly different.

I'd like to clear this up once and for all. Tuners. are you listening? lol Is there ANY difference in the short block? Pistons, cam, etc?

Anyone have the part numbers?

Thanks!

John

Don't know about the engine, the tranny is the same one, 1L7Z-7000-CC, I think.

here is what I got from yahoo canada and ford's site. they have the internal specs listed. As I have mentioned before, the HD and L manifolds have the same casting number on them (I visually confirmed this on a side by side.) The heads are also the same. Bore, stroke, and compression are also the same. The links are here:

http://www.fordtruckworld.com/forums/topic.asp?id=94435

the bore and stroke are listed as .2MM difference on the 02HD but I have to believe this is a mistake. I will see if my owners manual has that info.

I think the internals are exactly the same. Some engines and suspension even have SVT on them. Hmmmmmm

i snapped that pic before i cleaned it. I can't really clean the frame and mounts though cuz its got that waxy type coating on it. and yes...i clean the suspension. about 2 or 3 times a year i pull all the rims, give them a really good polishing, clean all the suspension pieces and all that. next spring i'm gonna paint any dull parts with semigloss black so it'll look better and easier to clean

I am almost positive the engines have different compression ratios, in fact I know they do, theyre listed in a couple dif. places on the Ford site and a few others. The compressioon is lower on the lightning due to the 8lb factory boost/ 6lb on the Harley, this is achieved through different pistons. I am not sure of other internal differences but the pistons are different, and as said before, lower compression ratio on the L.

...which IF TRUE would put limits on how far the HD can go and explain why an HD with the same setup as an L would produce different results, whether it be different HP at the crank or a blown motor.

Surely JL or someone has gutted one of these.

Still waiting on DropTop...

maybe i will stand corrected, but I now have two conflicting sets of data.

http://autos.msn.com/vip/engines.asp...=10024&src=vip

msn autos. lists all engines. lists the 02hd at 9.0 to 1 and the L at 8.4 to 1.

If that is the case, going up in boost a lot is not such a great idea for the rods.

I can't imagine why ford would have done this, though. why on earth a different engine for the two other than the pulley?

Ken

The could do it either way. Lightly build a standard 5.4L and throw a blower on it or detune a L 5.4, its hard to tell. I had doubts that SVT would put their motor non-SVT vehicle, so when I started looking into it I found different specs. Everything else appeared to be the same so I figured it was a mistake on the websites. Then when DropTop said there were different part #s I started looking into it again with no answers.

I wish I knew someone at an SVT dealer, I'd check out the part #s.

the part number on the motor could be different for other reasons than just the compression. Does the motor part number that he is referring to include the blower preinstalled? If so, then the number would have to be different as the upper pulley is different.

I would also assume that different part numbers would be out there for the different years even if the motor stayed the same.

I wouldn't go by that number, for sure...
