Thumbs up Better (easier) foglight mod!

Well, i recently did the foglight mod where i splice together the #5 and #12 wires. The problem with this was that the fogs are always on, which i didn't want. Now i could have ripped apart the switch, messed around with filing stuff down, and then try and glue it together and make a mess, and risk ruining the switch altogether and pay 75 bucks for a new one, but i didn't want to. So what i did was i spliced another wire that led out of the #5 one, and spliced another wire that came out of the #12 one. I used these wire clamp things which made it really easy cuz i didn't have to strip anything, but that would have worked also. ANyway, i ran these 2 extra wires down and under the dash and mounted a toggle switch with zipties to a round bar that was right under the steering wheel so i didn't even have to drill anything. I thought this was the best spot that i found, but you could mount it anywhere. Now, with the switch flipped up, it works like stock, whenever i flip the switch down, the fogs come on at every setting. Didn't take long at all to do, and just thought i'd share this easier fog mod with everyone, since i don't ever remember reading this one on here in the past 2 years.


Here's a pic of where i mounted it. Its like right above the break pedal, but you can't see it when looking in the truck, and its right in reach when sitting down.

So can you flip the switch even with the lights off to get your fogs to come on? I am trying to figure out how to make a switch so that I can use the factory settings while still having a switch to turn the fogs on at any time I want.
Thanks for any help!

Um, kinda? LoL, i tapped a 2nd wire into the #5 wire, and tapped another wire into the #12 wire. I ran those 2 spare wires under the dash to below the steering wheel and attached them to a toggle switch. So now whenever i have the switch flipped up, it acts totally stock, nothing changed. When i flip the switch down, nomatter what setting the **** is on, the fogs are on also (except for off cuz there is no power) So if i turn the parking lights on, the fogs are on automatically. Looks really bada$$ w/ the fogs and parking lights.

i can't remember, but on the back side of the connector behind the switch (on the wire side as oposed to the **** side) all the wires are numbered on the black plastic.
i think it was yellow and brown, but i'm not sure on that.

and btw, not sure if you know this, to get the switch panel out, there is a metal clamp at the bottom of the switch (by the notch), another one in the center of the left side, and another one at the top right corner. I just used a small thin screwdriver and pushed the clips down and it popped right out.

good luck, should be pretty easy

and if you haven't left for the store yet, pick up some wire splicer things. They just clamp onto both wires that you need to splice and make the connection for you. Comes like 5 in a pack and they were blue, the ones i got. Just easier cuz you don't have to strip any wires, just clamps on and makes the connection. hassle free...

The original light mod worked great for me. Rather then filing down the white plastic part with a file. I used my soldering iron with and old tip. It worked great! Now I can turn on my fogs with my auto-light, parking lights, or headlights. Works like a charm. Good Luck

yup, it does the same things by doing it this way, just don't have to mess with the switch. Although the other way is more convienent with just 1 switch, but with my luck i'd screw it up

im not sure if i understand how all this went together. you origanlly took #5 and #12 and spliced all 4 together????

if you did that then you took and put one wire from the switch to the #5 and the other side to #12????

if thats right let me know

lrutt, when you pull the switch assembly out of the dash, the part wehre all the wires are coming out of is numbered. Its really easy to find. #5 is yellow i'm almost positive. ANd they are both on the one end of the assembly. But its all numbered so easy to find.

MHTYFman, i only spliced 2 wires. I'll go through to the beginning and explain it all to try and clear anything up. if you have any more questions, jsut ask em

here's what i did the 1st time:
I took the #5 and the #12 wires and i spliced them together and that was it. WHen i did this, the fogs were ALWAYS no matter which setting the **** was on (except for off, cuz tehre's no power). I didn't want this, cuz i don't want the fogs on all the time, so i unspliced them, and taped up the wires separately, so where i started the 2nd time, is like the system was totally stock

Here's what i did to make it so i could controll when the fogs were on or off.
(the 2 spare wires i used were red, and the other black, i'm going to just say spare-red or spare-black in my instructions, just to make it simplier, and name the other wires by their #)

1. Splice # 5 wire into spare-red
2. splice #12 wire into spare-black
(#5 and #12 ARE NOT spliced together or attached together in any way)
3. Run the wires under the dash board to by under the steering wheel
4. attach spare-red to terminal 1 of the toggle switch
5. attach spare-black to terminal 2 of the toggle switch

And that's it

When the toggle switch is in the off position (up in my case) the circuit is broken, and the system acts as totally stock, and nothing is changed

when the toggle switch is in the on position (down in my case) the circuit is connected, and the foglights turn on in every setting on the headlight **** (except for off cuz there's no power)

I hope i explained this aight. if not, just ask more questions.

Is there a constant power I can pull from? I would like to be able to have the fog lights on seperately w/o running lights etc. Thanks

I'm not sure on that one. maybe somebody else would know though. Personally i think it looks meaner with just the parking lights and fog lights on

post if you find out anything, i'm sure others would want to know

Just finished the fog light mod this weekend. It works great. The #12 wire is black , I think and the #5 wire is brown, again I think. #12 is the last wire on the bottom of the plug on the right and the #5 is the second to the last on the top of the plug
The numbers are arranged as follows:
1 2 3 4 5 6
7 8 9 10 11 12

This is how it looks with the clipon top.

I mounted my switch under the light pod Looks good at night with the blue switch on!

This mod is really easy to do and should not take more than 1 hour if you are locting a switch on your dash and have to drill.

P.S.- make sure your dog is secure when working with a dremel! Have to do some touch up now.

I will post a pic when I get a chance.
