Cover Key
Cover Key
Just had my cover installed and thought the lock cylnder that I had to order was supposed to match my ignition key? Has anybody else got this or did the Leer dealer make a mistake? Is the rubber seal at the cab end of the cover go on the inside as was installed or on the outside?#1984
Can't help you on the lock issue but....
my front flap was installed on the inside as well but after seeing a few other non-Ford covers, their flap was on the outside...forced mine out as well-no wet spots in the bed. Now I wonder what the instructions from Leer were???

ditto on the lock cylinder that came with the truck--was in glove box on pickup and keyed to ignition key. Yours got delivered without a cylinder? I was surprised to find it there since up here in Canada, the cover was never part of the original parts list and we had to wait some months to be included in the free offer. Everything fits when the cover did arrive--and a nice one it is at that
Well that's a relief Casey. I was starting to wonder about the lock and if it was of any use. Are you going on the tour? I just got a call and they said there was a shipment coming from Leer and I should be getting my cover soon.

about the lock not matching the ignition and doors, if you or your dealer lost the lock, then Ford provided a replacement. Then if FORD wanted they could have found your vehicle files (remember they build 500,000 F150 a year) and then paid a man to key your tumblers to your key code. This means they would have to $pay$ someone to look for file andthen someone else to key lock. It was just easyer for Ford to made a key and shipped you a new key then to reset tumblers on lock to your key. One thing they did do with the Sport Trac and there available two piece cover was ship the locks disassembled and have the dealer make the locks to match the key. but with Leer in the loop that would have ment a Third party making your key. and just the posibilitys of theft and what not, even with the pats key system. Thats another thing. was your new key like the older Ford key or was it a Pats key blank (just wondering you do not have to reply to that)
Ford could have worked a little diffrent cause you were to bring vehicle to dealer and the dealer was to deliver truck to leer dealer to have cover installed (believe me you would not have wanted Dealers installing them)(just trust me on that)
anyway the dealers could have made the key match before being installed by leer. but if lock did not work after who could blame who, leer dealer blames Ford dealer or Ford dealer Blames Leer dealer. it turns into nightmare.
Now if you really want key to match. The dealer could order a new unassembles lock cylinder, thats how they are shipped to dealers parts department, and have the dealers service department key the new lock cylinder to your ignition key. I WOULD THINK TWICE about haveing that done. The Tech's I have had work for me at Ford dealers, non of them liked setting the lock cylinders or anything to do with locks. most dealers call lock smiths and then the hardest part of the Leer install of the cover was getting the lock cylinder inside the cover. I will tell you this. I Personaly would not want my cover touched by anyone at a Ford dealer. PERIOD I have worked for Ford dealers the past 19 years.
Words for thought.

Lock Match
The key is a Ford Key and is supposed to match your ignition key.
I called the H-D F-150 number to confirm that they were supposed to match--I was supposedly the "first" person to call about this problem.
The matching of the ignition key supposedly one of the main reasons it took so long to get the covers out. Maybe more people should call. TH\hey said Leer would be getting in touch with me and that was almost two weeks ago. I'll keep ya posted...
