Does one HAVE to go with a programmer, or is there some sort of chip that is also effective?

No sir - these trucks no longer have ports tha can accomodate a chip. There are inline devices that go between the PCM and the connectors, but the folks making them do not produce what most consider to be effective tuning (Jet).

The whole thing with custom tuning is - if you decide you like the truck's driveability just the way it is, you can get a tune file that JUST raises/removes the speed limiter and leaves the rest basically unchanged, if you so desired.

did you not read any of the above hints? go get a tuner with custom tune and have the governor removed...easy as pie. It will cost you about $400 but well worth it in the end (your truck usually runs better than stock) I know my performance tune is beast on my truck

You say your not in to hot rodding it or racing, Then why so upset? If your not racing you shouldn't be up that high anyway!

On a more serious note. There is real talk about having all limiters set to 85mph. The highest MPH in the states is 80. Feds are supposed to vote on that later this year.

Ok, so I just changed the 120 on my speedometer to 102. Now it's accurate.

want to go fast? buy a gt500......then keep those speeds off the streets!! Where the "h" are you doing 100 plus on public roads anyway? Believe me i like to go fast but it has its place. I've seen speeds over 165 mph on my Suzuki GSXR, but immediately after thought, " what the hell was i thinking? I coulda killed myself, not to mention someone else" My advice.... grow up and SLOW DOWN!!!!!

Thanks everyone. I posted this a long time ago when I wasn't too educated on newer model vehicles. Nowadays I understand more, and what you all meant by limiters, etc. I just couldn't get out of "old school" ways. I used to do all my own work and mods on my GN, but now new technology has me scratching my head under the hood. However, I do love new tech, and I am still in love with my '11 Ford F-150 Harley Davidson Edition. I'm not a reckless driver - I was just a little angry when I went to pass someone on the Florida highway and couldn't! ;-)
