Problem at the gas pump
Problem at the gas pump
Hope someone can help!
When I try to gas up my '99 f150, I can't just squeeze the nozzle, lock iy in place and walk away. It keeps shutting off as if the tank is full. Doesn't matter if it's 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4 full. The only way I can get fuel to go in is if I stand there and just barely depress the trigger. Took a good ten minutes to fill the tank from 1/4 yesterday. Just started doing this a week or so ago. Haven't called the dealer yet. Thought I would try here first.
Also, there is nothing in the filler neck obstructing the flow. And it seems the vent holes around the fill hole are clear.
Thanks for any help.

Baherb,
Here's a stupid question for you: does this happen all the time, at different stations, or only at one place?
Where ya from in Iowa? I'm from the Quad Cities area - I moved to southwest Indiana about 2.5 years ago and can't wait to move back!

Happens to me too...but on several different vehicles at different times. Doesnt matter what station or pump it just happens every once in awhile. I figure it has to do with the nozzle being too sensitive. Or the fuel going in faster than air can come out. Not a big deal...
goneloco,
S.E. Ia. This happens at any and all gas stations and I've tried to set the handle at the first notch. Still no good.
Shouldn't have to just "live with it".
Thanks for the replies

This MIGHT help
Try turning the gas nozzzle 180 degrees so that it's exactly the opposite of how you'd normally pump the gas - make sure the trigger part is on top. I heard this worked on some people''s cars & it was just the angle of the nozzle & the way it fit in the filler neck that caused the pump to keep shutting off.
This won't explain why it hapened all of a sudden but it may help get you out of there a little faster.
Hope this helps - at least for now!

Did you buy the truck new?
My brother had the same thing happen on a used car he bought.
Previous owner lost key to locking gas cap and broke it off, beating parts of it into the filler tube.
Or maybe your filler tube has been damaged, crumpled.
Or,
Do you always insert the nozzle all the way into the tank?
Mine will cut off when I do that.
I just back it out an inch or two to straighten out the flow.
Your problem is either blockage or flow angle.
It's definetely fixable and I DO want you to fix it before I'm behind you in line.

I usually fill up with 85-90 liters. (21-24 gallons)
I fill it up "manually", I never lock it cause it will turn off several times before I reach 80 liters (21 gallons)
After that it is a p.i.t.s to fill up all the way to 90 liters.
Pump shutts off a lot of times.
Best thing for me is to barely press the trigger, sometimes I try a different angle but best thing is what raoul said not to put the nozzle all the way in.
First I thought this was a problem caused by the pumps in Europe. I am glad to hear other members have problems with filling up too.

The filler neck shouldn't give any problems, flow should be ok.
Never had any problems with people behind me in line.
People know these American cars are gasguzzlers.
They accept waiting for a while.

Called the service manager at my dealer and was told it sounds like the problem is the check valve located inside the filler tube. And no, not the little flapper at the top of the filler tube. Will find out for sure tommorrow and post results. Maybe that is what's wrong with some of the other poster's trucks out there.
Here's my update;
The problem was small pieces of plastic bag or paper covering the screen above the check valve inside the filler neck. Gas goes in faster now than I can burn it up.
thanks
