Florida Trail Riding

Living in the middle Florida has many advantages. The weather is always warm, I'm an hour north of all the major theme parks (which I rarely go to, lol), and I'm an hour from the coast in either direction. Another awesome part of Florida that I haven't shared much on the forum is the riding trails at the Ocala National Forest. A 25 minute drive east of my house takes me directly to the entrance of the "tread lightly" trail, an 81-mile network of truck, Jeep, and ATV trails composed of sugar sand, mud, and lime rock. These trails were designed to give off-road enthusiasts an opportunity to legally ride trails into the heart of the national forest without disturbing the conservation areas.

To give the new BFGs a proper initiation, I decided to take the truck out to explore the trails. I stayed on the wider trails to avoid scratching up the truck, but there are tons of windy trails I haven't even seen yet. I'll check them out next time I go out there. Because I was alone, I decided to take it easy and avoid the mud, but I did give the 4x4 a nice workout through the sugar sand. While I was out there, I managed to get some of the best shots of the truck yet, with some true Florida scenery along with it (not all Floridians have their toes in the sand on the beach ). I also saw plenty of deer, several turkeys, and a bear cub. It was a nice reprieve from the traffic and noise of every day life. Enjoy!

They look awesome John. Aren't you glad you decided to go up to the 315/70/17's?

How are you liking the KO2's? I'm torn between them and Toyo AT II's.

Your truck looks pretty clean for having been out on the trail -- must not have found any mud!

Oh yeah, definitely! And I only had to do minor trimming (on the exact part of the bumper you mentioned. It was rubbing in reverse). I think the stance and overall look of the truck is perfect now Thanks again!

I really like them so far. I've had the Toyos before. I liked them, but the tread wore down after only about 30k miles. I was disappointed. So then when I got this truck I decided to try out the Nittos. The tread wear on these seemed to be going great (they still looked brand new), but they ride rough (yeah, yeah, I know it's a truck, but they were very noticeable). They were also kind of boring to me. The tread pattern was not very exciting.

These BFGs have an interesting tread pattern, an aggressive sidewall, and a smooth ride. Plus I've heard with proper rotation, they last forever. Really happy with the choice.

Haha! Yeah, there was plenty of mud, but I was alone out there, so I decided to avoid the possibility of getting stuck. Sugar sand is tricky enough. And don't give me any grief - you wouldn't even let your truck see a few blades of grass!

Nice looking pictures...the BFG's in that width usually do real good in the sand.

Yeah, they were great! I used the 4wd to give it a workout, but in most places I didn't need it.

Great, thanks for the feedback. I am going to see if they have any "P" sizes available yet. I don't need the LT tire for what I do and it would be nice to save the weight if possible. I'll likely just stick with 285's.

I had Toyo AT II Extreme's on the F350. I really liked them, but they seem to be wearing fast (Dad now has the truck), I am disappointed, especially for the price.

Yeah I don't know why they can't seem to last long. I still like the tire, but it doesn't take long for them to look old. Maybe the XT (xtreme tread depth) have a few more miles in them.

And you should be able to find a P rated tire in either brand in a 285.
