He ran into me, and I never saw him...

That's one of the things I said to the police officer last night? I had taken my truck over to the inspection lanes in the morning for her first inspection. But it failed emissions. That's because I just had the battery replaced and it wiped out the memory. So the guy at the lanes said to take her out and put 100 miles or so on her, then bring her back tomorrow and it should be good to go. So I was out last night putting miles on the truck. It was around 6:00-6:10 when it happened. I never saw it. Just a faint shadow off to my right, and All of a sudden there was a BLAM! from the passenger side. The truck rocked like a huge gust of wind hit me, and it sounded like someone threw a huge concrete block at my truck. But NO......it was a DEER. A lot of good all my lighting did me. Because of on coming traffic I only had my low beams on, not even my fogs were on. About three cars were coming towards me. I may of seen the deer if I at least had the fogs on. And it was at an area where new houses are being built. They were to my right side, and the woods were on the left. I know how the deer are around here. But.....This deer really must of been trucking. I was only going 45-50mph thru there, and watching. There was one guy behind me in a truck. It was lifted a bit. When it happened I was stunned, but immediately knew. My eyes went right to the rearview mirrors as I hit the brakes to pull over. The guy behind me stopped in the middle of the road. But I didn't see a deer. I started backing up on the shoulder, and then the guy in the truck just slowly drove past me. Never waved, checked on me, nothing. So I back up to where I think I hit, I mean, it ran into me. Nothing. I throw the flashers on, then grab my small flashlight out of the center console. I get out, walk around to the front of the truck for a look, and no damage to the front at all. Nothing. Brushguard, lights, bumper, everything is fine, dirty as heck from the weather, but fine. Then I move to the passenger side and throw the light on the fender and I see where it hit. OMG! He ran into the side of the truck right at the wheel well. There is a huge scratch above the trim and runs back to the edge of the fender, and there is a buckle between the antenna and mirror. But the mirror was not touched, it's a tow mirror. Then I shine the light down the side of the truck... and then I see the real damage. Both doors from about midway, down to the running boards looked destroyed. They are buckled, rippled, scratched, and deer hair sticking in it at crease spots. Other than some rubbing the running boards didn't look touched. Then I move to the back side by the bed and the damage continues. The lower portion of the bed, ahead of the rear tire is damaged and buckled a bit. And there is a big glob of deer hair jammed into the front side of the wheel well lip. I hop back in the truck and call 911 to get an officer out. I call my sister and she comes to help me look for the deer. My house is about 8-10 miles away. While we wait for the police we look for the deer, but nothing. We found the area where he came across. It looks like he skidded on a patch of snow on the side of the road and literally slid into me. It looks like all four hoofs skidded in the snow for about two feet, then BLAM! Other than the hair stuck in the side of my truck, that's the only evidence of a deer. No blood, nothing. I hop back in the truck to warm up a bit. I went to roll the passenger front window down to say something to my sister, and got a loud SCREEEEEEEECH!. Crap. So I put it back up. Officer arrived about an hour later. Asked me a few questions, asked where was the deer. I said I never saw it, just a quick shadow, and have no idea where it went. So I gave him my info and ten minutes later we are off for home. It's snowing here at the moment. I have to go back to get the truck inspected this morning. But first I'm gonna take some pics. I'll post some up later. I go for an estimate on Saturday morning, but already told the insurance company where I want to take her.

That's a bizarre accident for sure. I think you were right on the fact the deer literally skid into you on the snow. Probably tried to turn and that's how it ended up "barreling" down the side of the truck.

I just hope it was severely injured and will recover out there on it's own. Sucks you couldn't find it.

Tough Luck! Beautiful truck by the way!

I had a huge buck deer run into me in a 35 mph zone entering the town of Peru, Nebraska just after dark. I think they see the road light up from the headlights and think it's a good time to cross the road. After that I decided that deer were so stupid that they must have been put on earth for us to eat.

Would you believe that I STILL couldn't get my truck past emissions? Before six said Not Ready, now just three. They are "Not Ready" on Heated catalyst, O2 sensor, O2 sensor heater. All others went ready but those. So the guy said I need to do more ON/OFF cycles. Any way, here are the pics I took of the damage.

Dang! That's a bunch of sheet metal!

I'm amazed the deer was not killed.

Geez, that is a crappy deal! I've hit and been hit by a few deer and have never had that many panels damaged. I hope that it gets fixed up to your needs!

Scarlet 02-05-2016 02:43 PM

As hard as the truck shook, I wouldn't be surprised if it was two or more. But the only tracks we found were of the hoofs sliding in that bit of snow. You can clearly see the slide of the hoofs. Funny thing thou, the snow was on the inner edge of the shoulder, which made it five feet or so from the edge of the road. Plus, there was a small embankment. So the inner edge of the shoulder was at road height, a small ditch, maybe one foot deep, then back up to the snow. That poor guy must of been really moving. That guy in the truck behind me saw the whole thing. And just took off. I wouldn't be surprised if he watched where the deer went, then went back later for it.

Sorry to see your truck get damaged man.

If you haven't, do the O2 sensor mod and space it out. I had to do that on my truc .

Ouch, I've been there a few times myself. There for a while we were getting one every year.

I had one occurance sort of like yours, he hit the corner of the front bumper, spun around and got the fender, drivers door and just a inch or two of the back door and he walked away.

Second time got one with the front right and killed the deer on impact and caused about 5k of damages. Hit the car so hard there was a piece of meat stuck on the fender and he crapped on the other end of it.

My dad had a '93 MKVIII Panther edition. Really nice car. He looked for a while to find a MKVIII that wasn't beat on. Nice cars...

I found a few pics from the last time I had a Deer incident. It was on Mischief night of '90. I was living at the beach at the time (Bethany Beach, Delaware). I was on Ocean highway which runs from Dewey beach, De. to Ocean city, MD. I seen the deer standing on the side of the road. Had plenty of time. I even slowed down. But he still insisted on jumping in front of me. I hit him square on. He rolled and rolled and rolled. He was done. Was in a '78 Chrysler Cordoba. Had to replace the front nose, grill, headlights. Bumper and windshield was OK. These pics are from the following Halloween in '91.
