Vote For How You'd Like Your Diesel F-150
 

On the homepage today, we posted an article about how 70 percent of Americans had yet to drive a diesel. I said that number would drop significantly if the F-150 were offered with an oil-burner, especially with how many of you want a diesel F-150. I still say Ford did the right thing by dumping the diesel. I ran the numbers once again based on today's fuel prices and a gas truck getting 21MPG and a diesel getting 30MPG with a diesel option costing $3000. The break even point if you ignore the extra maintenance costs of a diesel is 245,000 miles. Why on earth would you want an engine that makes less power and about the same torque as the EB when it takes that long to get your money back? I like diesels when done right but in this case it just doesn't make sense or cents.

EDIT: from those numbers and ignoring the extra purchase and maintenance costs, the diesel has to get 28MPG to make up for the higher fuel cost. Then you're breaking even on fuel but eating the other costs.

Ford may have no choice as Chrysler is offering one in their Ram 1/2 ton & soon to be Nissan with their 5.0 Cummins diesel ! Ford & GM will have to offer it to be competitive in the 1/2 ton market place in that segment!

I'd rather see Ford bring back the Ranger than offer a diesel in the F-150.

15 years ago, a diesel F-150 would have been a GREAT idea. Not today. The cost of operating a diesel in the US has gone up dramatically with today's emission standards and ULSD fuel. Add to that the relative cost of diesel vs. gas and that just compounds it. The current high diesel option price on the 3/4 ton+ trucks just drives the nail into the coffin. I don't see Ford or anyone else offering a diesel as a no or low cost option.

Overseas is a whole different story - what is the #1 vehicle of terrorists worldwide? A diesel Toyota Hilux with a machine gun mounted in the bed.
