How strong those school buses carrying your children are....here is one getting impacted at 65mph. Driver of the Chevy didn't even touch the brakes.

Four students in the rear were transported to get checked out but they are okay. The driver of the Chevy was airlifted for lower extremity trauma.

Here is a accident that happened a couple years ago.. Bus stopped on highway the driver of the chevy never even attempted to stop( i came by this about 30 seconds after it happened) They said she was going atleast 75. She died on impact all they children were fine and walking around after the accident.

I think it becomes a matter of sheer mass more than anything. Pretty insane how those SUVs are demolished

I've always assumed that school buses are a very safe mode of transportation. I'd guess they have a way of absorbing impact or at least distributing impact-forces very differently than most passenger vehicles (cars, trucks, suvs, etc.), hence the reason for not needing seat belts. Glad to hear all of the students are okay.

BlueBird the company that makes those bodies and also sells them to be turned into high end motor coaches has a reputation for over building them. My parents bought their Bird after they talked to an owner that rolled his 40ft 60,000# coach over the side of a switch back then had the towing company upright it and drove it to the nearest dealer to be fixed. They are very stout vehicles to say the least which goes to show you that a riveted all steel body is very strong.

The buss' frame is at cab level of the SUVs. The car went completely under the bus.
The end of the frame is always the most rigid point.

I looked up the safety of these buses. I'm a bus driver at my university and cdl trainer for other student trainees as well. School buses are indeed safer than what I drive. The school buses utilize a single panel per side from my understanding because apparently one company found that the riveted panels would shatter apart. Size is a large factor but the Wikipedia page talked about some of those features.
