Dirtbike or ATV ???????????????
Alright im starting to look at another toy and cant really decide what i want. we live on 10 acres and have about 2000 acres of county land that can be rode on right next door. I just basically want to jump on one and do some exploring. No tricks, stunts, mudding or anything. I am looking for used.
I dont want to spend 7k on a new four wheeler:rolleyes:. What size bike or atv would i need to get? Im 6foot 275lbs . Also what are easier to maintain atv or dirtbike. These are a few i have found.... ATV's 1.2004 wolverine 350cc 4wd complete top end rebuilt for $2800.00 (dealer) 2.Honda 250cc Sportrax http://sanangelo.craigslist.org/rvs/2214675190.html 3.Honda 250cc http://sanangelo.craigslist.org/mcy/2267303532.html Dirt Bikes 2000 cr250 http://sanangelo.craigslist.org/mcy/2281107174.html 2000 Suzuki drz 400 http://sanangelo.craigslist.org/mcy/2271349737.html 2005 Suzuki DR650 http://sanangelo.craigslist.org/mcy/2267363189.html Out of all these what looks like the best deal? |
If I were you I'd get a Honda Foreman 450. They're tough as nails.

I own a Brute 7504x4 and a KTM 250 2stroke dirtbike.
If I had to give up one of them, it would be the ATV. A dirtbike has alot of negatives but it is so much more fun once you start learning to ride. It feels really awkward for the first several months and you really need to find a good rider to ride with to teach you so that you don't start bad habits. I think an ATV is more usable and if it is cared for, it will resale better as well. Also, most people don't buy hardly any protective gear for ATV's. What is your spending range? If you go dirtbike, factor in about $700 for boots, helmet, shin guards, pants, gloves, goggles, and some form of body protection. I think I spent about $800 total. |

i vote 4 wheeler. a polaris!
|
i vote for the atv. more comfortable for longer periods of riding, and you can actually use, other than just ride it. a 250 would definitely be too small for you. the minimum i would say is a 300. i had a fourtrax 300 and my dad would ride it just fine and he weighed about 250.

i'd go with a fourwheeler unless there's some nice trails available.
if you get a dirtbike, for your size i'd get a 450f add a heavier flywheel, change your sprockets and a set of handguards and you'd be set. 2 stroke will be no fun in the woods just putting around and you will foul out sparkplugs quickly if you don't know how to ride one. the drz400 and 650 are ok bikes, i'd look into a early yz450f for around the same price and you will have a much better bike. maintenance isn't bad on them at all. mine was easier to work on then than my xr250, and was no more often than it either. maintenance is all relative to what you get. i did oil changes every two rides (by choice), valves maybe once every 6 months (once again by choice), bike never had an issue and felt just as good with a 100+ hours on it as it did new. |
yamaha grizzly. or settle for a kodiak 400/450.
either one is as dangerous as the other. example, i flipped my yamaha grizzly 660 because i had it in 4wd and gave it a little to much gas up a hill and it turned over on me. |
250 is wayyyy to small. I have an 07 and at 150lbs it is too small for me. My dad's brute 650 on the other hand is sweet. I think you would enjoy a nice 500 utility or 400ex
