Netflix Is Abandoning DVDs

Maybe this will help out Blockbuster a bit.

 

I find my self ordering movies from On-Demand more and more.

 

Thankfully, it doesn't look as if a change is imminent -- it would probably take a deal like this to get me to break down and finally get a DVR. Can you tell I'm not an "early adapter".......

 

Forgive me cause I'm not a Netflix'er, but what is the difference between either getting the DVD's physically or streaming them? I'm not asking for a technical explanation either, I get that. I use my brothers Netflix account sometimes on my iPad and on my Wii. I usually just watch what ever is available for "instant viewing". But I also see where you can add movies to your queue.

Can you not watch\stream the same DVD's you would get in the mail?

 

does streaming generally mean 720p?

 

I don't think it's that you can't or won't be able to stream the same movies. I think it's just a case of people not wanting to stream. Like DD said, some people aren't early adapters. Also, some people may not have the capabilities of streaming, like a laptop or an iPad or a Wii or an Xbox that would make it convenient.

 

I use my Wii to stream most of the movies from Netflix. Generally when I get a DVD from them I hold on to it for about a month before returning it.

I have noticed the availability of new releases on instant Netflix is increasing.

The picture quality is a little less than DVD's, but is getting better and I don't really notice a difference anymore.

 

Ah, I am a bit of a techy, so I guess I'm taking for granted that most people are set up for streaming. Heck, some might be and don't even know it. A lot of the newer BlueRay DVD's have wireless capability for online streaming from Netflix, etc.

So in short, if you're set up for streaming video, you won't really be impacted by this new change? Well other then the possibility of not having as high of quality video?

 

As it stands now, if you're a Netflix subscriber streaming video is just part of your subscription. You just need a streaming capable device and you're good to go. The most aggravating thing about Netflix is the long waits for popular DVDs when they're released. I've seen new releases pop up on HBO before I've received some new releases from Netflix. The movies available to stream are somewhat limited, but they are starting to add newer titles than what's been offered in the past. I wouldn't cancel my subscription because of that decision, but I'd want to see what the pricing matrix first.

 

Blockbuster has some of that stuff too now. And I never have a problem getting a new release with them. Plus you can return DVD's in the store for another new movie. I think I'm sticking with Blockbuster until/if they fold.

I stream them through both Xboxes and the Wii.

 

i canceled my sub. didnt watch enough. but I did order dvds more than I streamed, because most of what I wanted to see was not on the watch now.

 

I use both streaming and DVDs a lot through Netflix. I even use Amazon On-Demand and Zune to rent/stream movies, and still find myself at Blockbuster in the store renting movies. It's all about what is available. Netflix's Watch Instantly service is great, but they don't have a lot of new release movies or tv shows. They offer everything through DVD though. I mainly rent the latest season of a show or random old movies. Blockbuster doesn't carry a lot of old movies anymore, and they aren't available through many streaming services, so Netflix is a great option. I use Amazon On Demand and the Zune marketplace to rent/stream new release movies or even some TV shows. I still go to blockbuster to rent bluray movies. I found that is the best quality video. I watch a lot of content. I don't use the Blockbuster online, that would just be too much.

If Netflix made the change, I would be very upset. However, if they made every title available to instant, I wouldn't really mind. I mean everything though. Every new release, old film, TV shows, EVERYTHING. I wouldn't mind that. I wouldn't use as many services.

 

I stream mostly, especially on the road. The problem with cutting out DVD's is that most of the movies you can get from Netflix are not available to stream. Though there are quite a few that you can. I haven't ran out of things to watch yet, and I stick to action/adventure title almost exclusively.

 

If they get their entire library available for streaming including new releases it would be great. It is a hassle to return discs and wait for new ones.

I think the people that are going to be upset are those that copy the DVDs they get from Netflix.
