F150 over Tundra

Hey guys,

My buddy has always wanted an f150, and his dad told him if he meets a certain GPA his first year at college then he'll get him a truck.

Well he made the grades, and so his dad is going to get him a truck. He problem is his dad, who owns a Lexus, wants to get him a tundra because he thinks they are of way better quality because it's a Toyota. So he calls me up an asks if I can help him find websites or articles with cold hard facts pointing to the f150 being the better choice. I've already got a few things to give him, but I wanted to know if yall had anything to add.

Thanks in advance

The kid is getting a free truck for doing something he should anyways.

My suggestion is to let the Dad buy whatever he wants to, it's his money afterall.

You can start with this. Resell value.

And this. (Tied with the Tundra)

And for 2010, the Tundra isn't on the list.

As for his dad being the one paying for it, it is going to be the same amount of money either way, so why not get the kid what he really wants. He is more likely to take care of it if he likes it. Although I will be the first to admit, if I had any kids, they would be buying there own new vehicle. What the would get from me would be used and considered a loaner.

What's the old man going to get the kid if he gets good grades his sophomore year -- a weekend at the Four Seasons with a high-dollar call girl....???

My dad took a slightly different approach to motivation -- he more or less told me if I didn't get decent grades I'd find his boot up my a$$. Compared to your buddy's dad, my old man saved a TON of money....

he shouldnt complain if his dad is BUYING HIM a truck. if my dad bought me a dodge as my first truck i would have been like damn its a dodge, oh well i didnt pay for it!

im not disagreeing with yall in the slightest that he lucked out with his dad paying for a new truck. also, hes not complaining about the tundra, he just wants an f150. Its not going to save his dad money either way which truck he gets. the only reason his dad is leaning towards the tundra is that his dad has this misconception that american cars are crap, and Toyota is amazing and far superior. He's also not getting a brand new car, and he needs some form of transportation so that he can drive between mississippi and Tampa going to and from school. he doesnt have a car now that he can use which is why his dad is getting him one.

thanks Kingfish for the help

those tundras are bad ass trucks, ive looked at getting one. the 4.7 v8 has PLENTY of power and they are reliable, while looking i saw plenty with over 200k and drove just like new.

and tundras are made in the US..wtf is he talking about?

either way f150 vs tundra, both are good trucks. just the f150's have nicer interiors :D

Not my dad. He spent all that money buying new shoes.

Tell your friend to take what his dad is willing to buy. In a few years he can sell it or trade it for what he wants.

Why is he getting a truck if he need's to commute? Save everyone some money and find a nice car...

I dont see why the kid is getting harassed for getting a truck. My children will too as long as a. they keep 3.5+ and b. have a job or play sports. just the way it is imo.

Have him watch this video and see if he still wants that tundra!

The Tundra's aren't bad, but they're not great either. Their philosophy is the same as GM and Dodge, peak horsepower not usable low end torque. They're more like really heavy cars than trucks. I guess you really can't go wrong with a free truck.

glc 07-17-2010 02:16 PM

A Tundra is just a big heavy car with no trunk lid. If someone wanted to give me one, I wouldn't turn it down. In fact, I wouldn't mind having an older one with a V-6 and 5 speed stick.

The father obviously hates his son. His father is the reason the American auto market isn't far ahead in sales. The silly attitude that because it is a japanese company, it must be better. latest quality polls show otherwise. Ford has made great strides in quality. Have the son ask dad about all the toy recalls lately. That HAS to take some wind out of his sails.
