Who's had a root canal done?
Apparently they're telling me I need one of these. Several weeks ago they did a enlay(sp) but that's not getting it. The pain hasn't gone away but has gotten to the point to where if I breath in through my mouth the damn air hurts. My dentist doesn't do rc's so he referred me to his partner (what a racket). So I guess my question is, how much do these things cost and how long does it take. When it comes to the dentist I am the biggest sissy in the world so I am not looking forward to this. Btw, he gave me a prescription for Penicillin(in case of any infection) and Vicodin.

I've had 4 of them done in my life.
The procedure can vary from 90 minutes to 3 hours depending on how deep and how much work is required. My dentist is an over-chargin sumbich and charges $1,000+ for a root canal. Once the pain medication wears off be prepared to be very sore and hurting quite a bit until everything heals. I'd still rather get a root canal done than watch any movie with Rosie Perez in it. Good Luck! |
I've had two... they weren't bad. As for expenditures, I don't really remember but, my insurance snagged most of it...
It's not plesant but, I don't remember being in much pain -- in fact, I never got the script for the pain meds filled because I simply didn't need them. Frankly, I probably enjoyed his female assistant's company enough that I wasn't all that focused on any pain... She was, uhmm.... attractive. ;) |
Thanks guys.
Apparently I need to have an exam done first so I'm off to go spend 75 bucks, bastages!!!! |
I've had two this year and one many years ago. My dentist charged $650.00 for each. It's not bad at all but yer mouth will be sore from having it open so long. Once they pull the root out of the tooth, there is zero pain from the tooth as the roots/nerves are gone. There are different ways to finish a root canal but the best is to have the tooth capped with a temporary/permanent cap before leaving his office. Do not let them fill the tooth and cap later. I did on my first one and it broke in half. It's been an issue since and now that I'm having trouble with it they want to extract the half and drill in a stud in the bone with a false tooth- cost....$3,000.00. These last 2 they capped with a permanent cap so I didn't have to go back. A good side effect for me, not much in way of sinus issues anymore. I doubt you'll need the pain killers but I would suggest taking a max dose of Tylenol before going. That's what my dentist recommends and I'm back at work the same day. It's really not that bad and if it weren't for having yer mouth open so long, it's less painful than a filling.

John, my mom has had 2 of them, they eventually went bad a couple years down the road and she had to have the tooth pulled anyway. The way I see it, the only reason to get a root canal is to save the tooth, but if the tooth is in the back, just yank it and be done with it.

I've had 2 done:
1st was in 1990 when I was in the AF so no cost to me. The Dr was awesome I never even felt the Novocaine shots. And for his assistant she was smokin hot I hooked up with her on the beech a couple months later  2nd was in 2006 I found a DR just around the corner from my house. He told me he had good news and bad news. Bad news I needed a rout canal and my wisdom teeth out. Good news is for being 15 years and not going to the dentist that was all. He didn't do root canals or wisdom teeth but gave me referrals. I went to get my consultation for my root canal and I was in and out in 45 min... he did the root canal that day cause my dentist did all the prep work. My densest didn't believe he did the root canal that quick so he called to check. I think it cost me about $60 out of pocket for the Root Canal. I have a 80/20 split on my ins. As for the pain... I would have to say you are probably going through more pain by not having it done then you will by having it done. The pain you feel is from an infection. Your nerve ending in your tooth is dying and rotting away. that is the pain you feel. And they can give you gas and let you sleep through it procedure if you start to freaking out but insurance normaly doesn't cover gas. |
I was never fully numb.... they drill a hole in tooth, shot it up with more **** that didnt work, then they take assorted barbs and run it in and out in and out for about 45 mins ripping the nerve out... very painful, ****ing a.....
i want to get all my teeth pulled and have all titanium put in place.. **** teeth |
Yea.. the actual cleaning out of the nerve tissue is the worst part. Think of an x-ray of your tooth, with the two bottom parts in the gum. Like said above, they take different sized, wire-thin files and run them up and down inside those two bottom parts.
I just had my first one ever last week.. defiantly gave me a new view of dental care (not that I ignored them, but didn't floss as much as I should have). |
i have... it sucks! I hate the dentist :(

Just yank it if its in the back!!
Long story short: went to my dentist to get it done, couldnt get me numb that day, went back again, couldnt get me numb again, went back a third time and still couldnt get me numb. Referred me to a "specialist" he numbed me, got halfway thru and hit a nerve that wasnt numb...worst pain ever ( so I thought ) he says hold on, this is gonna hurt worse than anything in your life, but only for a few seconds. He puts his knee in my chest, then shoots a needle right in the center of my tooth, straight up. HOLY F*&CK..he was right, that hurt. 2 weeks later, it starts hurting..he does a second root canal ( free of charge ) 6 months later, its screwed up, hurting so bad I had to have it yanked. Once again, with knees in my chest. I hate the dentist!!!! Like I said, if it's in the back, don't waste your money on a root canal, just get it yanked and be done with it. BREW:beers: |
Damn guys, this thread is freaking me out
So I went to this dentist/surgeon that my dentist referred me to. Some Arab chick (not bad lookin' either ) in this bad azz office. I would have to say her business is extremely well. Anyways, she does all these little tests and the last one was this swab that when it hits your tooth it's a freezing type of feeling. Well she hit molar #15 and I damn near jumped out of the chair!!! She says(in broken English)"Yep, it's pretty bad!". I'm like "Ya' think!". Cheese and rice!!!! Anyways, they want to do this Monday 8 a.m. for a measly 900 bucks. I'm not sure I'm going to have much of a choice but after your post Brew, I'm starting to wonder . Maybe I'll just go take one of those Vicodin's and forget about it for now :o |
Hey John, just get it yanked and be done with it. It's quicker and less painful, not to mention a lot cheaper. When I had mine done, it cost me 18 bucks after insurance.
