Speedometer cluster question

hey guys,

now i know some of you may not know this but

my dad has a 2003 Chevy Suburban, recently his speedometer stopped working.

he was quoted at the dealership $1000 to fix it, i think they were planning on replacing the cluster.

anyway i thought to myself thats bs, i can do the cluster myself if we just get a new one

but do you guys really think its the cluster? i mean i dont think the speedometer would just die and everything else works

what do you guys think?

gm had alot of problems with the first few years with those clusters so i wouldnt dought if it was the cluster. i thought the government was making them recall them? maybe not. but everyone of them i've seen, the speedo was on the wrong side(sittin at the max speed position). and all the gauges just went blank and the odometer didnt show anything and all that good stuff.

is the abs light on or anything? he has either 3 or 4 abs sensors. so its either all of them went up at the same time or the speedo itself.

i coulda sworn someone said they were recalling some of them. i dont know, but the whole cluster comes as one assembly so you'd have to get the whole thing which sucks because they arent cheap. but they definately shouldnt cost 1000 bucks to replace it. i think the part last time i changed one was 380 bucks and like 3-4 hours labor. i think, i'm not 100% sure.

he said there was actually a recall on them but it was only up to 70,000 miles and he had 73,000 at the time he received the letter from GM.

i was thinking about just pulling one out from a junk yard and swapping it?

i took my cluster out when i had my jeep, it only took about 20 minutes

you could do that but dont forget that its a pretty common problem so you'll most likely be doing it again later on.
