Congratts on your trip, I know it will be a blast. I took a cross country trip a few summers back. Took the north route on the way to Calif, and the southern route on the way back east. The trip took two months and was a blast.Just wish I had more time, but got to see a lot od the country, and met a lot of nice people. I would love to take anouther trip like that soon, and meet some of the F150 online community on the way. Bye the way I turn the big 40 today, I would have loved to go the the national rally, but my friends planned a big 40 party for me tomorow. Roadrunner keep us posted on your trip would love to see pics from your travels Good luck Don ------------------ 1999 F150 4x4 4.6V8 regcab/shortbed Oxford White with Wedgewood Blue two tone, with Blue Captains chairs Bullet Cat Back, Superchip,WMS Velocity Tube with modified K&N filter. I got you covered in South Carolina. I'm in the capital, Columbia, and its about 100 miles to Charleston, 150 miles to Myrtle beach and 100 miles to Charlotte, NC or the mountains. Real convenient.
Nascar- Darlington in March, 80 miles away or Charlotte in May, 100 miles away! Harley bike week in May also in Myrtle Beach. We get a lot of Canadians down here in what we call winter. 40 to 50 degrees. If you don't like humid heat you may want to do the southern tour Nov. thru Mar. or otherwise you will be sweating, but definetely worth seeing. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif Harleyrider ------------------ 2000 Lariat 4x4 Supercab Black Clearcoat Flowmaster 50 series SUV using original tailpipe K&N Filter CamLocker Aluminum Toolbox Tinted Windows Vent Visors On Order: A.R.E. Sounds like a great plan. I hope to be able to do it myself someday. A few hints, there is a saying: If you want to drive accross America and see nothing of it, go on the Interstate. You will enjoy the trip a 1000 times more if you get away from the concrete 4 laners and utilize the secondary roads. It will take longer time wise but it won't feel that way.
In the Peoples Repuplic of Kalifornia I've always enjoyed the Ventura / Ojai area. Simply beautifull. The PCH Hw-1 on the coast is mandatory for tourists :-) ,just remember to drive north in the morning or south in the PM or the sun will blind you. I'm in N'awlins and you may just want to permanently stop here. Hit the french quarter and the casinos for some serious fun. Body armor is recommended but not required for certain parts of the city. Notably the north, south, east and west parts of town. He he. Enjoy your trip. Fritz ------------------ 2000 F150 XLT 4x2 ExtCab Styleside 4.6 Auto in Island Blue with Dark Graphite interior. Roadrunner: I don't think you're a bonehead at all! I think you should do everything interesting and pleasurable in life that you can, while you can, that doesn't hurt someone else, and to hell with what anyone says. Life's a one-way trip, as they say, and death-bed regrets SUCK, big time. (Paul Brandt recorded a song about that. It's called "I meant to do that", I think.)
I still have fond memories of my six-week trip with a friend that we took after graduating from university, in my first Ford truck, an F-100. We went west from Ottawa to Vancouver, north to Prince George, south to San Francisco and Los Angeles, east to Vegas, and back across the mid-west, through Detroit and home. Saw some friends, saw stuff you'd never see anywhere else, and met lots of friendly strangers along the way. Fritzthecat is right about getting off the Interstate. Ask your library or local book store for a copy of a book called (wait for it!) "Off the Interstate". It's a few years old now, that book, but it's full of great things to see and do in the local towns, festivals, contests, weird and tacky roadside tourist attractions, etc. Take lots of pictures, eh? ------------------ Black 2000 SC short-box XLT. 4.2V-6, 5-speed, 3.55 limited-slip. Roadrunner!
Maybe we'll get to meet after all.... Let me know of your departure plans and I'll try to meet you at the ferry dock on this side. Perhaps we could put a few miles on the odometers together. If the timing is right you just might have the Washington Chapter in your rear-view mirror... Tom in Tacoma |
Let me know when you're in Atlanta - we'll all go out for barbecue!!
Steve |
C'mon Steve, take'em to the Varsity."what'll ya have" they can lube their truck w/ the leftovers...
seriuosly though, roadrunner, you'll enjoy the Keys...you have to hit Key West and eat some of the local places (I like Kelly's personally...owned by Kelly McGillis..of Top Gun fame..she even hostesses sometimes) ..then do the Duval Street crawl. Hit the lighthouse and Harry Trumans little whitehouse while you're there, both are historical...and don't miss the sunset at the square..can we say "the freaks come out at night"....then you can come up the coast and maybe hit spring training games ...Cardinals and Expos are in West Palm area and Dodgers are a little north in Vero....and the best team of course can be found at Walt Disney World...the Braves! |
How about my side of Florida. Sarasota was voted the "The Best Big City for Retirement" in a recent edition of Modern Maturity. Sarasota is probably one of the most beautiful and best governed cities I've been in. There really is no bad part of town.
There is the Ringling Museum featuring John and Mable Ringling's mansion on Sarasota Bay. Hernando DeSoto landed on Manatee River. It is the the headquarters for some of the worlds largest boat builders Wellcraft, Chris Craft and Donzi amongst others. Many celebrites have homes in Srarsota and on our barrier islands: Longboat Key, Siesta Key, St. Armands Key, Anna Maria Island, Bird Key, etc. Including Brian Johnson (ACDC lead singer), Jerry Springer, **** Vitale, Tom Sellick, Tom Cruise just to name a few. The town I live in however, SUCKS. There must be ten thousand drug dealers here and in USA Today it was listed as the 4th most violent city in the US. Bradenton and Sarsota are basically one HUGE city with different counties and county governments. Manatee County SUCKS. A two minute ride on I-75 puts me in Sarasota. I would say enjoy Floridas west coast overall except Bradenton. Enjoy the ride. I live about .5 miles off I-75 at exit42. Let me know and we'll do a Waffle at the Waffle House. Have fun. |

Hey, Seacrow. I don't know if or when Roadrunner may be in Sarasota, but there's a good chance I'll be near you three times over the upcoming winter. The plan is that I drive my dad's Mustang convertible south from Ottawa, Canada, in late October and fly back, then fly down in April and drive it back to Canada.
My folks have a villa in Venice FLA. I agree with you about Bradenton, however. But that Siesta Key beach in Sarasota is THE most beautiful beach I have ever been on. Man, that sand is like corn starch -- on the hottest day, it's cool on your bare feet. I've never felt anything like it. Is Lido Beach still topless? I'm also going to the Daytona 500 in late February, so I'll try to connect with you, and with you, too, Roadrunner, if you are in Florida when I am. ------------------ Black 2000 SC short-box XLT. 4.2V-6, 5-speed, 3.55 limited-slip. Roadrunner: just take life one day at a time and enjoy each and every minute of it. Let me know about when you'll be in NC. Of course you're welcome!! I'm on the coast. You know, that city that gets hit w/all the hurricanes https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif Do plan on taking a ferry out to the outer banks. Asheville, over in the mountain part of this state, has a "summer cottage" well worth visiting called Biltmore. And there's a little doughnut shop down on Carolina Beach that has the best plain glazed doughnuts, well worth the whole trip!! I noticed in you're sig that you've a 5th wheel, will you be towing & camping out??? If you come by my place, you can park in the yard (although for hook-ups all we have is a drop cord and a water hose) Maybe we could meet at a camp site near here and camp w/you. We pull a 30'TT Good luck to you and we can't wait to meet you.
