Anyone who knows about older toyota 4x4's...
hey guys, I've posted this on pickuptruck.com but it takes forever to get a reply over there. Anyways, i'm looking into getting an '85 Toyota 4x4 4cylinder for driving during during school. What sorta mileage should one expect of a truck like this? My 15-17 just isn't gonna cut it...

Hey buddy, my co-worker has an '89 Toyota 4x4 with the v6. He commutes from Williamsburg on I64 and gets 21-22 mpg.
A 4cyl should do better but, your youth will cancel that out. He's an old fart. I drove an '85 Toyota 2wd for 14 years an always got 22 city 27 highway. The '85 has a carb and timing chain. They went EFI and timing belt in'86. They are notorious for oil leaks. Put 180K on it and the new owner is still happy with it. gmc: I used to have a 1980 toyota 4x4 with a 20R and a 4-speed, with 4.10 gears. It had 31's at's and a 3" lift. It was essentually my beater truck. We took it on a fishing trip and avged about 14 with it.
Buddy has a 1989 Toyota ext cab 4x4 with a 22re and a 5-speed with 31's and he avgs 18. The smaller the tire and the higher the gear ratio the better mileage you'll get. I also heard were a automatic will get you better mileage. But they are very hard to come by. 20R, 2190cc displacement, 8.4:1 compression, 96 hp 22R (Carb), 2367 cc disp, 9.0:1 compression, 100 hp 22RE (EFI), 2367 cc disp, 9.4:1 compression, 116 hp 1980 was the last year for the 20r, after that it was 22r's. The 22r's stock Aisan carb had 326 cfm. I think it was a 2 barrel. raoul: I think some of the late 1985's have efi. My friends little brother has a 1985 regular cab longbed 1-ton with a 22re and a 5-speed. Do you go into norfolk often? I was talking to my cousin the other day, (he works at the dry dock there) and he told me that the construction is terrible, and he hates the tyeups. 79-81 toyota trucks were offered with an 18R or 20R. The 22R debuted in '82 on Celicas and pickups. The 22RE was offered in the 82 Celica and was offered for the first time on pickups in 85. The 22R continued in the Celica in Carbed or EFI form until 86 and in pickups until 95.5. The 22R or 22RE never had a timing belt. The automatics and 4speed manuals were dogish on mileage. The 5speed was much better. Mileage on these trucks was much more dependent on driving habits.

I had an 84 4-Runner 4x4 22R 5speed 4cyl. This was the first year of the 4-Runner, all parts that I had replaced were from their truck line. The 4-Runner parts never fit it. It was great on milage, I think around 20+ but that was only as long as I was on flat ground. When I moved to Wash STATE and had to travel all those "real" mountains, milage went into the sewer. Also that little 4cyl just couldn't get up those inclines. Still loved the truck because it never quit. I ended up selling it to a family in Texas and it's still running w/way over 200K on it. Just do reg maintaince and change out parts when they wear out!!! Mine even had a valve knock that never affected how it ran.

I figured up the cost of driving the toyota at a generous 25 mpg and driving my truck at a weak 16 mpg for 6 months. The difference was only $350 bucks. The truck would cost me $250 bucks. Add to that property tax ($25 bucks maybe), getting smaller tires(has 33x12.50). Insurance doesn't matter b/c it would be switched off of the GMC to the Toyota during school (can't afford both at same time). Anyways, I would lose that saved 350 bucks before i even started driving the thing. Looks like I'll just have to enjoy my truck and get fed gas money from the parents when fall comes around. I go into Norfolk twice a week now for a class(ends this Thursday) This fall when school starts back, ODU, I'll be going 5-6 times a week. Traffic through the Midtown Tunnel into Norfolk is terrible in the morning from 8-9:30 and leaving Norfolk to Portsmouth in the afternoon 3-6. Pray that theres not a breakdown in the 'tube'... At one time, I thought about buying something small and economical to operate because of the increasing gas prices. After I thought about it for a while, I realized just how stupid it is to buy a second vehicle just to save on gas. It just doesn't make any economic sense unless I got rid of the F-150. That was NOT an option. Even if gasoline hits $3 a gallon, it will still be cheaper to keep the truck.

I've ventured that same idea too. I may be buying a street motorcycle instead. cheaper, gets better mileage, and is a chick magnet.

The thought of a motorcycle has crossed my mind too... But it would be just way too impractical for me.
