Question Winter driving

This winter will be my first winter in a truck. Last year I had a mustang. Anybody have any good winter driving tips to help me keep my baby safe. Its only 2wd. Also I haven't ever driven a stick on ice and snow? Any tips for that. I am almost 18 so i have one year of winter driving under my belt and that was in a mustang. I am planning on putting sand bags in the bed later today. Its supposed to snow here in southern IL tomorrow. Any tips will be helpful. Thanks.

Put the sand bags as directly over the rear wheels as possible. Take off slowly and you won't have as much wheel spin. Slow down twice as soon as normal, especially for curves. And above all, don't panic!!!

I just got done putting about 15 gallons of sand in the back of the truck. I used a board to divide the bed. It put the bags between that board and the tailgate. I also checked all my tire presures. I guess i am all set.

Hi Cooltrucks,

I've got a 4x2 as well. I also put sand into 5-gallon buckets and place them in the back of the bed with a 2x6 in the vertical channel of the bed. But to really help me go (and stop)I bought a set of studded snow tires. The truck does pretty well now. Are studded snow tires illegal in Illinois? Thought of getting a pair of snow tires?

One thing you can do to prevent wheelspin is to start out in 2nd gear (auto or manual). But as Wolvrin704 suggests - slow down waaaaay ahead of time.

If you survived driving a Mustang during a southern Illinois winter last year - you'll do fine. Both the 'stang and your truck are light in the @ss.

Looking forward to doin' doughnuts...

I am going to have my dad drive my truck one day when it is raining that way he can see how much these goodyears on here suck. I would like to get a set of some tire with a little more adgressive tread pattern. Thats my only other main concern about dring in snow and ice is how much these goodyears suck.

Well this is my first winter in a truck as well and I drove mustnags in the last 8 my advice as far as driving in the snow is to take it easy on the gas try starting out in 2nd that will help you out some and your truck should drive better than a mustang in the snow because of the deeper tread on the tires and put some wieght in the bed.

Actually I am glad that I own a truck to use during the winter. I have 6 sandbags, and a tool box full of stuff, and 1/5yearold at's. Last winter I got along fine on ice, didnt drive on it!!!!! I have been told to release air pressure a bit to help on ice, any ideas on that one?

Cool

Just wanted to let everyone know that my Good Years are performing OK on the slick South Florida roads. I have not had any incidents in the last few 80 degree days. At night, when it dips down to say 65 degrees or so, it gets a little harder to hold the road but it is no biggie.

I don't see what all of the fuss is about, I enjoy winter driving! It is nice driving with the windows down for once.

pastmaster: airing down on ice will help but make sure it's all ice driving. air down widens the tires...good for ice, bad for snow. also remember airing down makes your tires more susceptible to cut sidewalls from sharp ice edges.

seacrow: my 4x4 is working great in wis. winter but tommorrow i'm leaving for fla. figured i should see if it will still be as great of a truck down there as well. hope i don't freeze to death down there.

btw: your raining roads get as slick as our snowy roads. i've seen some pretty bad wrecks down there in the rain
