Why be a moderator?

I just browsed IB's site and they have a bunch of message forums. Are they getting free labor from you moderators?

If they are its genius! Start a company where you "hire" people to police the forums and pay them nothing. Why get all the headaches for nothing?

Just curious. Dont get mad at me for questioning things. I am in a questioning mood today.

Im shocked at the few number of moderators this forum has. Usually the moderators do it for free but a forum of this size should have 10-12 moderators. Usually moderators are given 3 or 4 sections they frequent and so that way most sections have 2 or 3 moderators checking on them.

The moderators also have a forum we cant see where they discuss problem members and general goings on.

The mods here are severely overworked, I sure hope they get paid

IF you browse the forum for recreation, why not browse with more power than others?

I'd love to be a mod, but on this particular site, I'm not really familiar with it nor the people, but it would be fun

Conversely, do you think the forum should charge its members for access? After all, providing a service for free isn't right.

Besides, it ain't like the staff around here go to a member and say "Moderate this forum, or else." Moderators usually volunteer, and they ain't expecting to get paid. Are you high? Moderators do what they do to try to better the forum and its membership overall.

I've moderated (and moderate) forums elsewhere, and I do it because I wanted to help. It may sound like a cliche, but it's one of those things you don't really understand and/or appreciate until you do it.

On a side note, I agree, there's an awful lot of forums here for four or five (or however many there are) to cover. It seems like you guys are spread pretty thin; at another forum I moderate, there's typically two (or more) moderators for every forum.

It gets old, I'm pretty sure thats why Stealth is a moderator. RP got tired of his constant reporting of threads and just decided he could save a couple steps by letting Stealth do it. I would have done the same thing

I don't think RP alone decides who gets the lock button or not. Usually (or ideally), all the moderators/staff/owners of the forum have to agree on the person in question.

I report threads all the time. The spam ones anyway. They are the only ones that offend me.

I've always wondered how do you become a moderator?

I've done the mod/admin bit on a couple of boards but decided to leave that to those with the gumption to deal with it.
It's not always easy, and being fair and consistent takes a knack.

Well now I know, it's so you can delete threads that don't break any rules. Since you couldn't do that when you reported em. Now you just do it yourself !!

I think for some it could be a power thing like shopping mall security officer VS. real Cop.
