I had one. The walkman was the genesis of the personal, portable music player. Replace by the discman when cds became mainstream. Remember carrying around those cd cases the size of a briefcase? Now mp3 players have surpassed the discman. I dont even own a music cd. Everything that I had on disc has long been converted to mp3 and I buy my music through download services.

Its really nice to have a few thousand songs in your pocket readily accessible by a scroll and a click.

I actually had a small, mono solid state radio with an earphone prior to the introduction of the Sony Walkman, then of course a Walkman, and a Discman, and now a Sony Ericcson Walkman cell phone, which is a cell phone / mp3 player. One less thing to stuff in my pocket in the morning on the way to work.

I often think about how far we have come while I am watching a movie on my 160 gb Ipod. I was little when tapes were going out and cd's were coming in. The Fact that I can fit every cd I own and then alot more onto a device smaller than the walkman is amazing.

i had a couple walkmans, then i realized it was dumb to pay $100 for a cd player considering i went through new ones like every month. I had a lot of them then about 4 years ago i got my first mp3 player, a DELL DJ30. Blue led screen, 30 gigs of space. I thought it was awesome. Did what it had to until about a 2 years after it when a headphone jack broke off inside the hole. from then on the thing was ****ed. Even when we got the jack out, the port was so messed up headphones didnt stay in or sound right. So march last year finally i got a 30 gig zune. Thought it was the coolest, full BIG color screen. Again 30 gigs of space for movies, videos, songs whatever. Tried out the wifi with the transferring songs to other zunes with a friend, thought that was sweet too. Then slowly things started to go wrong. First one, battery was absolute ****. Keep in mind i had a best buy replacement warranty so i could replace these. So i got another one, this one the battery was even worse. So i replace it, this time for a white one, hoping i would have better luck. Battery life was way better than the black ones, but a couple months in of owning the white one, it starts vibrating and locking up real bad, sometimes completly freezing. Then i replaced that one for my final zune, another white one and that thing was good until about a week ago, when the sync cable started crashing my computer. So i took it to best buy this weekend, hoping for another POS zune. This time theyre telling me the way i was replacing it before was wrong and because they didnt have the same color, iw as going to have to get a black one and "void" my warranty. I said screw it if im gonna have to void my warranty, i want somethin better. So i went back to a different best buy that had 8gig Ipod touches in stock, got my $230 store credit from the zune, added $120 for the warranty and to match the price of the ipod touch, and here i am now with the best MP3 player in the world.

Ive drooled over it in some of my other posts, and even made posts on this forum on my ipod . Best gadget ive ever owned. It really does everything you need; play music, play videos, view pictures, go on the internet, chat with other people on any messenger, contact list, watch youtube videos, has an organizer with calendar in which you can set events and even reminders or alarms for the event, and its all on a big TOUCH SCREEN.

Thanks for reading my book

ahh yes the touch, would have been what I got if I didn't was to put a couple hundred dvds worth of movies and tv shows onto it. Really like the Idea behind the touch just wish they would make a much bigger model.

Technology is a great thing. I was just thinking the other day how much the Walkman changed the way people think about portable audio, and how much better it's become since then.

My wife picked my up a new head unit for our one car for Christmas, with front inputs from digital devices. Plug in the MP3 player and go, or store 100 Cds worth of music in a small case on a few CDs in MP3 or WMA format. Better still, some of the head units now have memory card and/or USB inputs on the front. You could have a few flash drives or memory cards storing what used to take up loads and loads of space.

Yup, the touch was a disappointment in the size of the storage. I've got my 80GB ipod and love that my entire music collection is on it. All my CD's are in a big box up in storage.

My requirement for a car stereo...aux in. My ipod gets plugged in there, I wear it while mountain biking and even plug it in at home. I love it. Definately a long way from a walkman.

Remember being amazed when tape players could play the other side without you having to flip them over? Man, technology rocks.

Walkman>Discman> laptop (WinAmp/MusicMatch)> Creative Zen: Vision W.

I love the Zen. I've got 60 gigs of space, about 20 of which is still free. The rest is music and videos. And with the A/V cable, I can plug it up in the truck and play movies for my oldest to watch.

As soon as my youngest son's car seat is turned around to face forward (April 1st), I'll be ordering and installing a second Pioneer head rest monitor.
