Its slow so I'll just complain about this...
I'm going to school part time at night to finish my degree. I've got about a year left. I'm currently carrying a 4.0 @ Johns Hopkins. Thankfully I've got a job where I can post on here all day and do my school work and still get paid.
I just started a new class last night. The guy gives us a full class (9 people) assignment. We have to be prepared to present in two weeks. He is going to randomly pick 1 of the 9 to give the presentation and if that person can't convince him to buy the product than we all fail the assignment. Its worth 20% of the final grade. That really ticks me off. I've worked to keep a 4.0 and now my 4.0 could rest in the hands of an idiot who can't spell their own name. He says that is how it is in the real world....great can I fire the person if they screw up? Done whining now... |
I hear ya Vader; I alwasy hated group projects for just that reason. You get stuck with a set of idiots and then you have to put in 3,4,5x the work to get the grade you've come to expect from your assignments.
So what does a 4.0 at Johns Hopkins equate to in the real world anyway? 2.5? |
That is crazy.
Sounds like a professor on a power trip to me... |
I would present your concern in advance to the professor....that way....you will come across as a c0cky SOB and he will pick you.....problem solved.....NEXT.....:beers:

I went to JHU because they had an accelerated 2 year program. The name would probably sound more impressive too.
The thing is...its not much different than community college. The papers are a little longer but beyond that the work is just as easy/hard. Probably a big waste of money. |

He's a former Marine/FBI guy, etc. Guess he wants us to sink or swim together, you know that teamwork crap.... I dont want to seem like I'm difficult but I definitely took the lead in the group...hopefully he'll pick me...I'd rather control my own fate.... |

Sounds like a lazy Prof. Why not have everyone to a presentation?
My son was telling me this weekend that he had a class project that was to be done in groups. He is like you and doesn't like to depend on someone else to carry their end of the load. He told the Prof that he wanted to do his own. Prof had no problem. Many times the group projects are a means of sharing the wealth of knowledge and ability of the class. Unfortunately, it allows for the slackers in the group to ride on the coat tails of the better students. You have the right idea in jumping in and taking charge. Make it your own project with the rest just assisting. Of course if this was the real world, you would spend hours on a project, give a great presentation, just so your boss could steal it and use it at the next board meeting. good luck. |

Your instructor might just be a jerk & pick whomever he thinks knows the least about it. Also, if this is an online class, how are you presenting? I figure we'll just get everyone on the same page monday night so that the following monday we should all be as prepared as possible. |
Johns Hopkins is a friggin world class school. Good on ya for gettin-r-done.
I think the Prof might be teaching an important lesson about teamwork and how things really are in the real world (to an extent). All you can do is voice your opinion now and work hard until it's go time. |

Sounds like a bogus deal to me, hope it works out for you.
