Digital Camera's

As a Christmas present to myself [with a little help from the wife and Santa], I am going to upgrade the digital camera to a SLR. I am down to the Cannon EOS 20D or the EOS 350XT Digital Rebel XT. And now I am stuck. Looking for input from anyone on either of these.

The use of this is going to be:
1) General use: Taking pictures of the kids, dog, wife, and the F150
2) Action and Sports shots: kids, dog, and the F150
3) Close up/Macros: items for my companies website, and the F150 parts
4) Low Light: gatherings, kids programs, and the F150 group pics
5) Bedroom: figure that one out yourself. :D

I have lurked on a few boards for the digital cameras: man are those guys anal, nit picky, persistent, focused, and brand conscious: [just like we are about our trucks :) ] Since we have good pictures on the board, I figured this might give me some real world views, not all of the “bench racing” that I picked up over on those boards. My experience is with 35mm [some pro work a long, long time ago] and since then, a lot with the ‘prosumer” line of cameras –currently a Minolta 7Hi, so I usually know which end of the camera to use, depending upon beer and spirit intakes. Since this will be riding with me in the truck, it needs to be fairly tough....

Thanks for the input

PS: The camera guys are even worse when it comes to using the search feature.

I dont have an SLR, High end P&S here, I do borrow a 20D from a friend on occasion. It takes nice pics and works well with a slave. You will find alot of Nikon people here. (Dont tell anyone but I use a Sony) :D

Maybe somebody will beable to jump in here with somehting on the actuall differences between those two cameras for you.
Mean while for your reading pleasure, here is a thread that hits on about all of them and the pros and cons, when to choose an SLR, etc, etc

https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...6&page=1&pp=40

Hope that helps on your quest.

Ever heard of the search feature?

I am a Nikon shooter myself and for very good reasons that I will keep to myself since you seem to have your heart set on Canon. If I were going to choose between only those two it would be the 20D hands down. Niether of the two is going to be worth a damn for action but the 20D will blow the Rebel XT out of the water.

The Rebel body has been recycled so many times it will make your head spin. Seems as thought Canon could never seem to get it right with this one cause they constantly upgrade it.

The 20D on the other hand is a real camera. It is like comparing apples to oranges.

Now if you want a real thrill ride put a couple hundred with it and preorder one of these bad boy. This thing is smokin and mine will be ordered in March.

Edited to remove that huge ass picture that has nothing to do with this thread :D

Holy sh1t!!! That pic wasn't supposed to be that big. Sorry man. Lets you see the good details though :beers:

PSS-Mag Nov 20, 2005 12:35 AM

Son of a biscuit!
That thing is almost as big as my rose pic!

I thought that I wanted a rebel for a long time.
Because... for the sole reason that it is what all the pros around here use.
I am starting to lean towards Nikon myself. Sometime in the next year or two I might step up to a DSLR. I'll definatly be taking Nikon for a test spin at that time.
I don't know if these guys have corrupted me or made me see the light! :D

That rose was HUGE! I liked it though. Very good detail and well lit.

If all those pros are using the Rebel they are not doing themselves or thier cusomers any justice. It is a consumer grade camera at best. IMO if you can get a camera in the pretty silver it has no place in the hands of a pro. Not even as a back up body.

My sister-in-law has a digital rebel and claims to be a pro. She even has a studio in town. She asked me one day if I would shoot her camera for her to take her family pics for her. I agreed but also took along my old trusty Nikon N90s film camera with me. She wanted the Mississippi River as a background. I took all the shots she wanted and after shooting each pose with her Digirebel I grabbed my Nikon. She asked what I was doing that for? She said if I wanted copies she would just have them printed for me. My reply was " when you get home and see that all the highlights are blown out from your camera you will be glad I brought mine along.

She called me the next day and asked if I got the film developed yet. I told her I should have prints the next day. My 10 year old Nikon out metered her brand new Canon. I even warned her not to buy it.

Check out www.skunkabilly.com

Poke around the website, lots of pics on there taken with a Nikon D70, lots of evaluation with the different lenses available. Plus the Skunk is a good guy. :)

Here we go again guys

Bowser..I'm not an expert by any means, but if I were to do it all over, I would get the same camera again, the Nikon D50. Its awesome and I love it. I guess the only advice I could give at this point is,first, read thru that thread that PSS-Mag gave the link for. Thats what did me in (in a good way) It's full of good info and some great links. Second, if at all possible go to a store where you can actually look at the camera and try them out. Then I would also try to get some pictures taken with each of the cameras you are considering. This will help make your decision easier. If you want to see any from the D50, let me know and I will send you some of mine, again, i'm no expert but I have some pretty nice pics. Also do a search for "pictures" there was a thread a few weeks ago where we all posted some pics. Oh, last thing...stay away from PSS-Mag...he'll spend your money before you know what happens  (thats a joke, you will figure out when you read the other threads)

BREW :beers:

I have the Canon Rebel 20D and love it, although I've only owned it for approx 6 months. It takes excellent pics and is very easy to use and to download pics from. I don't know anything about the Nikon. I do know that my husband shopped for a year before picking this camera for me, and he researched my "Outdoor Photographer" magazine everytime I received a new issue. So he did his research on all cameras and still chose this one.

HTH

Wich one do you have? The Rebel and 20D are 2 very different cameras. The Rebel comes in two different models. The Rebel (300D), and the Rebel XT (350D). The 20D is an all together differnt camera.

The 20D is a good camera. If I were a Canon man in need of a digital body the 20D would be the camera I would look for. BUT I'm a Nikon man and the D200 is going to be my late X-mas gift to myself.

I don't sell any of my equipment. I have cameras dating back close to 30 years that I still use on a regular basis. I love getting back to the good old days where you had to think about things and figure out exposures for yourself. The techknowlogy of todays cameras have made things very easy but on the other hand it has also made people lazy so I like to keep myself brushed up on the old school.
