You know you're in Texas when...

You no longer associate bridges with water.

You can say 110 degrees without fainting.

A cold front only cools it off to 95 degrees.

Your car overheats without you driving it.

The temperature drops below 95, and you bring along a jacket.

You can make instant sun tea.

You can tell people what a soaker hose is good for.

Hot air balloons can't go up, because the air outside is hotter than the air inside.

You realize that window tint should be standard equipment on new cars.

You notice the best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.

Hot water comes out of both taps.

It's noon in July, kids are on summer vacation, and no one is outside.

A hot shower can cool you down.

When the beer gut and big butt don't keep you from wearing shorts.

You wish you had gotten cloth seats instead of leather.

Your brother's braces make blisters on his lips.

It's 7:30 AM, and you're already sweating.

It's 11:30 PM, and you're still sweating.

When people say 'You'd better water your foundation' you don't look at them like they're stupid.

So very true cia. That last one about watering the foundation is great. I moved here 25+ yrs ago and remember my first summer...neighbor came over and said "be sure to water your foundation". I said WTF??!

I'm not young but dont care if you judge me.
But WTF?

Is that suppose to make the house grow or something???

What does that actually mean or is that a joke they pull on outsiders when they come in as a Texas hazing or something?

No, it's not like beign in the Army when they send you for a can of:

Muffler oil
Squelch Grease
Box of Grid squares
Left-handed Crescent Wrench
T.R. Double E's
Frame Relay Bracket
Cable Stretcher
Or, give you a pieec of chalk and a ball pein hammer and have you marking "X's" in the soft spots on the armor of a Tank.

In Texas (Certain parts anyway) if you don't water your foundation- it will crack (As mine has) and you'll have to pay thousands (As I will) to have it repaired. Doors will not close properly, or worse- won't open..

In the blazing Texas heat, and especially in North Texas, much of which used to be farm land, and is now "Suburbs" in the heat- the land actually pulls away from the slab of your home, which allows your house to shift under it's own weight- and it can crack the foundation, break pipes undr your slab, etcetera...

As a matter of prevention- many of the houses here- you will find either:

A.) An in-ground sprinkler system that effectively waters the grass & soil up to your slab, keeping the land moist, and more importantly- right up against the slab.

B.) A soaker hose to do everythign listed in "A".

It has been blazing hot this yeat- and we've had little or no rain (Which is why I wish Rita had brought her fat-@$$ this way and given us some rain). We are 8 inches below normal- but- I've lived in Texas for 13 years now- We can make that up in a day with some of the storms we can get- it's just a b***h when you go this long with no rain. Consequently, even with watering- the sun baked all the moisture out of my yard, and the land now has huge cracks in it. The dirt pulls away from the concrete slab, and even away from the posts on my privacy fence, and the sidewalks too. This led to shifting.

I now need 6 piers to "right" my house, which will cost me $3,000.00 ($4,300 if it need mud-jacking) $500.00/pier.

To give you an idea of how many houses this has happened to- every reputable foundation company I've called- has clients booked for every day until Mid-December before they can even start work. They appraised our issue in Mid September.

So, yes- watering the foundation is no joke- if you don't do it (LIke I didn't do for most of the summer) you will pay. If you do, do it- and it's as hot as it's been this year- you still may have to do it.

WHen I was in Killen, this wasn't the case. There's only like 6" of topsoil in that area, then you hit rock. You can damm-near nail the 2 x 4's straight to the ground, and build the house from there...

Nobody is watering foundations in central TX. Move north of 635 in Dallas, and you'll find soaker houses around a lot if not all of the houses.

HUH, learn something new every day....

That's pretty bad, I hate to hear about your problems. Isn't home owner-ship great?

GB150 Sep 27, 2005 06:42 PM

CIA isn't joking. Water the foundation or pay up.

ScrewedUPF150 Sep 27, 2005 07:39 PM

Yes Sir, September and it is still hot here...........

Heh, the 3rd one just happened today. On the radio they were doing the weather, said that a cold front had passed through N. Texas and the panhandle, but wasnt big enough to make it down here. Supposed to be another one coming soon thats bigger, Panhandle should see 70s, N. Texas should see 80s, and down here we might get into the low 90's

I think the heat index today was like 112*

TXCoUnTrYbOy Sep 27, 2005 10:03 PM

Down here in SE Texas we are supposed to get a cold front or 2 this week. Gonna get down to like 80. Time to get the jacket out. Today heat index got well over 110, actual temp was i think 102 or 103. Been record highs the last couple days.

The real sad thing about all of those is, they are all completely true.

cia-agent Sep 28, 2005 10:29 AM

Yep- Home ownership is so great- at times I wish I'd just gotten a luxury apartment with a 2-car garage.
----------------------------------

Supposed to be 101 today; with a heat index of 106.

As of right now, it's 82 degrees and the dew point is 78 degrees. 88% humidity.

Cold frotn came through yesterday and we only got to 97. The 2nd cold front will come through tonight, triggering storm, and we're supposed to dip to 63 for a low, and 79 for a high on Thursday.

About damm time!!

You know you're in Texas when...

...you're being constantly visited by that moron Dubbya.

Glad Minnesota doesn't have to apologize for him.

Id say its a privelage. Im proud that the President of this great country is a Texan.

Heres a new one

You know your in Texas if...

You show pride in your country and its leader no matter what, even if you dont agree with everything. You are a proud American, not an anti-American liberal.
