I'm so happy! Brother bought an airplane!

My brother, who does a little bit of everything, just bought a Cessna 177. He doesn't even have his pilots liscense, but he is about start I guess! He is going to use it for his business, which I will explain. But this is soooo cool! I've always wanted my pilots liscense, and now I have a way to get them! He said if I'd buy the gas and get me an instructer I could use it to my heart's content, if he's not using it. WOOHOO!!

He bought it to use to take infared pictures of crops and then make variable rate pesticide and fertilizer recomendations....long story. He works with a flying service where I live. They are excellent mechanics, and excellent pilots, so we should have good people to support us on this. He also farms, but that's another story. I help him farm while I'm not working.

I can't wait this is gonna be so exciting! Any pilots on here?

It helps tremendously if you don't have to rent a plane to get hours. I'm new to this but the plane and paying an instructor is the 2 main costs, and I think I've got the hook up on an instructor to at least give me a break. I haven't been around planes much, but this is a major step in the right direction.

Good luck -- I've heard that owning a plane is kind of like owning a boat (a hole in the water that you throw money into) but I guess if your brother can write it off as part of his business that becomes less of an issue.

I have (2) buddies who have their license for flying small planes like that, and both have tried to get me to go up with them. The thing that is funny about it is that driving with either one of these guys on the highway is like taking your life into your own hands (talk on cellphone with one hand, reach for the map in the backseat with the other, and steer with your knees!) and there is no way in HE11 you would get me to leave "terra firma" with either of them at the helm!

Might I suggest installing a macro in your email program.

Something like:

If there is no activity for X number of days/weeks, automatically email f150online and report a cessna plane crash.

J/k of course...but dang I wouldn't fly in them little things....too many accidents for me. It just a newspaper blurb waiting to happen.

That's a good one Vader. I was just thinking yesterday.... If Jamz lost a Rudi's fight and ended up dead, how would we know? There needs to be a system for these sorts of things.

Chit...my dream job would be crop dusting. I've rode in them before and it is awesome. I rode in the backseat of an 802 Airtractor fertilizing and it was awesome! The only thing holding me back is my wife, and yes there is a chance I could leave my kids fatherless someday. I know some old cropdusters though.

I know a few...I also knew one that died and one of my good freinds from college broke his back in a Bell 47 (Mash Helicopter) and can barely walk. I also know a guy who was driving his F150 down the road and a drunk hit him head on. stuff happens. I'm saying fear wouldn't stop me from doing what I want to.

Congrats with the plane purchase. Have fun flying. What type of engine is in it a Lycoming or a Continental. Have fun when you have to do maintenance on it.

He said it's a low houred 150hp Lycoming. Not a powerhouse at all, but will do what we need to do with it.
