How to get rid of a wasp/hornet's nest?

:help:
I just found a wasp or hornets nest on the door of my little wood shed. I've never had to deal with one before, so I'm asking you guys what I should do.
I don't know if they are wasps or hornets, but they are about 3/4" long with yellow and black stripes. The nest is about the size of a baseball and it is quite active. Any advise welcome...
Thanks.

We always throw disel on anykind of wasp/hornet nest and it kills them. You should probably go get some raid or whatever kind of wasp spray and spray it then run like hell :D

Get up early in the morning before they are active and spray them with something like RAID Wasp & Hornet insecticide. This should get them all. This spray is a stream, so you can spray from 10 feet away. When use this stuff, they drop like a rock and flutter on the ground for about 3 seconds before they die. Just make sure you do it before they really get active.

Buy a can of wasp spray from the hardware store. Your best bet for an effective kill is to hit the nest after dusk when they are less active and everyone is in for the night. Don long sleeve shirt and pants, etc. Get close enough to get a good aim (even take a test shot at a different target so you know what to expect), make sure you have your escape route planned. Aim for the center of the nest. Then when you spray, keep spraying for 4-5 seconds and cover the entire nest. Then run like he77 and get somewhere safe. Check the nest the next day, knock it down and sweep up all the dead wasps.

probably a good idea to RAID them and get the nest off the shed before taking this step.

Huck, it's a wood shed. Yeah, gasoline and a match would be effective. But the collateral losses might be higher than the acceptable limit.

Perhaps a more effective (and less damaging) method of attack could be observed HERE.

I agree with the after dark attack. They are mostly all in the nest and inactive at that point. I would suggest getting two cans of the wasp/hornet spray. Nothing worse than running out before they're all dead, then RUNNING AWAY screaming with that goosebump scared all over feeling.

:beers: Thanks guys, looks like the best way is to go with the spray and do it at night. I'll dress in all black so they won't see me! LOL! Anything cool I should be saying as I spray? Like: "Asta la Vista, baby", or "The tribe has spoken!"

I prefer "Johnny Dangerously"

fargin' bastages as I kill them off.

sounds like yeller jackets...does the nest have honeycomb like cells, or is it a hollow shape with an opening?

If it's open honycomb looking thing, then definately yellowjackets. Not that it really matters though...

I just got back from town. Picked up 2 cans of Raid MAX wasp & hornet foam bug killer. You spray from a distance and the foam blocks off the entrance, the you move in, insert the straw and fill 'er up. Now I have to wait till night time. Once darkness hits, I strike. :rocker:

Ah, nothing as good as when a good plan comes together.... don't forget to blackout your face with shoe polish. Don't smile, they'll see the white of your teeth. Sneak up on the winged bastards, and don't leave a man, woman, or child alive in the nest to tell of the carnage!!!!!
