Anyone here own, or personally know anyone who owns the new generation Range Rover (preferably an 05 or 04).

If so, I'd be interested in your opinion of it. Any problems with it, if they got the bugs out by 04 or 05, overall opinion, that kind of stuff.

Yup . . .

BMX bought Land Rover and redesigned the Range Rover. The model as it is now is BMW designed and has a BMW engine (the 4.4 V8 that's in the X5). After they designed and built the Range Rover, they up and turned around and sold the company to Ford.

BMW stills builds the engine (and tranny I believe). Ford takes the profits.

(Actually, LR is in the red, but not for long)

I know that when LR was still in British hands it was notorious for electrical problems, among other things.

When the new design came out (2003 I think) it was known to have some electrical bugs...but have not heard anything about the 04....and the new 05 has new electronics and new GPS. Like I've said, I've heard awful rumours...but honestly . . . they can't all be bad? Can they?

They are everywhere here. Seems to be really popular with the soccor moms. Unfotunately, although I see them all over, I don't know anyone who actually has one.

I trust the guys on this board so I wanted to get the opinions here before I go asking total strangers.

Speaking of Ford . . . I hear SVT is now totally dead. RIP.

K-man, I relate the electrical problems to the vibe issue with the F150s... would the vibe stop you from getting a new F150? Nah, its a hellova vehicle. I'd get a 'rover in a heartbeat if I could fit. Stupid small SUVs... :mad: I'd have skipped the F150 and be in a new LR3 right now if I fit.

The new Rovers are sweet rides. Wait until you drive one!!!

The first change BMW did back in the last half of the 1999 Range Rover model was change the electronic system to BOSCH from GEMS.

I just purchased an '01 Range Rover HSE in Aug to see if I would be interested in investing in a newer one. $79K is just more money than I want to invest especially when in three years you will only get $30K out of it. I do write off these TOYS on taxes for my business and I cannot justify taking a $49K hit. OK, I would receive a tax break of ~$16K making the true hit $33k... I will by a used one in a few years under warranty instead of losing that kind of money.

Anyway, I do love the Range Rover I am driving... It was a clean California car with 40K miles purchased through Bear Valley Land Rovers

That whole thing was kinda screwy because BMW bought RANGE ROVER, and Ford bought LAND ROVER. BMW developed the 4.4L V-8 for the RR and if memory serves the 4.6 was Ford derived in the LR's.

I don't know if Ford owns both LR & RR now; but I do know that BMW jettisoned RR a year or three after taking them over. I just don't know who owns RR now; but I do remember that whomever has RR now, BMW pocketed nicely from it- and all they REALLy gave up was their own, in-house 4.4L V8.

I have two friends, one of whom is a former NFL player- their wives both drive the New Range Rovers. I haven't ridden in them yet; but I'm not overwhelmed with what is see in the new Range Rover. It's not drastically different from the old one.


What I am impressed with, is the new LR3 redesign. Much improved, but still no beauty queen.

Were I in the market for an upscale SUV; I'd be forced to choose between the LX-470 and a Navigator Ultimate. Either of which I'd take over the Range Rover.

Scratch that: I'd buy the New BMW X5 4.8is. You should see the wheels & tires on that thing. My other friend was given one as a loaner while his 7 was in the shop. (The 4.4 is, not the 4.8) And, the 4.4 was zippy. The 4.8 has 100 more horses I believe.

X5 3.0, 4.4, 4.6 & 4.8 (The 4.8 is basically anMX-5

Yeah, Ford owns Land Rover. The Range Rover is the top-line model under the Land Rover brand; Range Rover isn't a separate company.

While the current Range Rover is the most-capable BMW SUV made, Ford has plans on replacing the BMW engine with a Jaguar-based engine since they also own Jaguar. It will likely be the supercharged "R" version, though a naturally-aspirated version may also be offered.

The LR3 engine is also Jaguar-based design. It's not related to the mod motors in our trucks.

Land Rover is the company, Range Rover is the product. BMW used to own LR, but then Ford finally purchased LR in 2000 from BMW. However, Ford moved on with BMWs design & engine for the new RR. Get it?
