Well, they always said Pontiac was the poor-man's BMW. (Because of the similiarly shaped grills)

hcmq Aug 24, 2004 08:50 PM

If my poor memory serves me correctly didn't BMW sue Pontiac over the similar grills?

Any way there should be a law!

It's a better looking BMW than the new BMWs look.

The new BMWs, designed by Chris Bangle, are some of the ugliest cars ever designed.

Their falling sales and low customer satisfaction numbers ever since the release of all the Bangle designs are a testament to that.

They should have shot that guy and burned all the plans before ever building any of them.

I think the Pontiac is a perfect tribute to Bangle's Botched Beemers.

As a designer I don't understand how BMW can just sit there and watch a Bozo like Bangle single-handedly destroy an entire line of automobiles. There must have been someone high-up at BMW that made the decision to use his design 'talents' and didn't want to be accused of making a bad call. I can't imagine that it will be too long before they hand him his walking papers, and Bangle's too. Does anybody have any sales figures for the 'Banglized' BMW's vs the older ones?

I gotta jump in here... you guys are nuts! First, BMW sales are NOT slipping in any way. They continue to ship more cars over here than ever before. They are expanding their product line and growing as a business. Folks may not like Bangle or his new stuff, but that's tough chit since that is the way BMW is going. The new 3er will be a little more conservative (the 3er is to BMW as the F150 is to Ford) but still show much of the 'new' look of BMW. And judging by the spy shots thus far, its going to sell like hot cakes. The new 5 is a hit, and the 7 is starting to move as people have warmed up to it. The X series is H-O-T HOT and selling well. The only thing BMW hasn't successfully been able to peddle over here is some of the Z's and thier wagons.

Bangle Rules!

MROLDV8 Aug 25, 2004 11:54 AM

BMW might be shipping cars to where you live, but I sure don't see any Bangle-mobiles here in the Cincinnati area. Sure would like to see some data to back up you comment. If a vehicle has good styling, people shouldn't have to 'warm up to' it. Even an ugly girlfriend starts to look good after enough time. I still think Bangle will be out on the street after BMW wakes up.

Really? What planet do you live on?

If you look at BMW North America's press release you will see their sales of the cars are dropping. The numbers that BMW quotes show an overall drop of 3 percent, but that overall number includes the Mini, and the sport utility vehicles which continue to sell fairly well. Remove those from the equation and it gets ugly.
BMW's own automobiles (the Bangle Abortions) sales "DIPPED 25 PERCENT" in July. Year to date sales from 2004 compared to 2003 are down 7.7 percent.. I've also included the numbers for their X series which show very big gains (which is the only thing offsetting their awful sales everywhere else.

Oh, and in case you're interested, marketing numbers are projected to be worse. The 6 series is a big disappointment sales wise, and the 5 series sales are falling, the 7 series sales are continuning to worsen, and that little Z thing has reached a point were they can't give it away.

Gee, do you think this is why BMW "promoted" Bozo, I mean Bangle, to the board so they could get him out of the design labs so he couldn't do any more damage?
"Chris...put the pencil downand step away from the computer! Join us in the board room while we bring in new designers to try to stop the hemorrhaging!"

Below are quotes from BMW of North America's press release...

BMW of North America, LLC reported its sales of 21,479 automobiles and Sports Activity Vehicles, down 3 percent compared to the 22,105 vehicles reported last July.

BMW Automobile Sales

BMW's automobile sales dipped 25 percent in July, to 13,974 versus 18,559 in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, sales were down 7.7 percent, to 111,580 automobiles compared to 120,912 in the same period in 2003.

BMW Sports Activity Vehicle Sales

Sales of BMW's Sports Activity Vehicles continued to be exceptionally strong in July. Total June SAV sales jumped to 7,505, compared to 3,546 vehicles sold in July 2003, a jump of 112 percent. Year-to-date, sales of BMW's SAV models were up 72 percent, to 35,733 vehicles compared to 20,761 for the same period in 2003.
