SAT'S? Opinions needed....
 

My genius son :rolleyes: scoffed when i asked him what he has been doing to prepare for his SAT's? He also said he didn't need to take them until next year (he's a junior now).

My opinion was to take them now and retake them again if he wasn't happy with his scores - (BTW he is a really good student and test taker). He said that looks bad to the colleges if you take them over again.

Am I missing something here? Have things changed in the past 20+ years since I was in High School?

I just went through that as well last year (when I was a SR).

I took my SATs twice, once Jr year, and again. My score went up about 100 points the 2nd time.

I would recommend to him he take them now (my sister is as well), and take again if necessary.

All the college talks I went to, they always tell us that the number of time we take the test does not matter. And truly I dont think it does. They just look at your highest one.

Point being - take it your Jr year.

Oh and for preparation, there are alot of methods. There are the big huge books that have old SAT tests and practice problems, which would be the best option.

take it from a senior in high school.

i took them towards the end of my junior year and i did alright on them. i took them again earlier this month and did better. colleges take your BEST score. they dont look at the others. they might glance at them but the other tests dont do anything to harm you.

Preparing for the SATs is fairly important. Has he taken the PSAT's? i took them and they seemed to help me be prepared as to what kind of questions i should look for on the tests.

also have your son take the ACT's and SAT II's.

I was going to also suggest taking the ACTs, but not all colleges look at them. Same with SAT II's, I would not worry about those unless
1) you have alot of time
2) you like taking tests
3) your college(s) require them

I fall under 3, but never had to take them :)

i took the ACT twice--once my junior year and the beginning of my senior year. I would suggest doing it the winter or spring of his junior year, that way if he messes up, hes got 3 opportunities during his senior year to make it up.


tip: tell him to read FAST on the reading part. 5 stories, 10 questions on each in 40 mins. or something like that.

I did PSAT's in 10th grade, SAT's later in 10th and 11th. 3 times total, and I did SAT II's in 11th. Better to do them and get them done so you're not as rushed in your senior year.

most schools don't care how many times you take the. The UC system takes your best math and best verbal scores, so you can get a higher score by combining 2 different test dates. that was the system when I got in to UCLA in 1997, i think it is still the same. have him take them twice.
