Received this today, and he's got a point

This says it all!

After hearing that the state of Florida changed its opinion and let a Muslim woman have her picture on her driver's license with her face covered, this is an editorial written by an American citizen, published in a Tampa newspaper.

IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others.

I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America. Our population is almost entirely made up of descendants of immigrants. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of America being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.

We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!

"In God We Trust " is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.

If Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives every citizen the right to express his opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great American freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.

If you agree -- pass this along; if you don't agree -- simple delete it!

No flame intended, but:

That's a bunch of "Internet Bull*****".

The State of Florida DID NOT allow her to keep her veil in place, and that article wasn't published in any Tampa newspaper...

Part 1

Part 2

We may not know how to count votes in Florida, but we don't let veil-wearing dingbats push us around, either.

I understand the frustration, but lets not be too racist. Remember that many come to North America to escape persecution. They shouldn't find it here too.

Ain't nothing racist about it. Id stands for identification. How anyone suppose to be identified with there face covered? That kinda defeats the purpose of having an id. Plus if you bend the rule for one you have to bend it for everyone else.

There's a big difference between persecution/racism, and defending my culture, and my way of life. Just because you come from some other country that is so terrible you have to come here, doesn't mean I want to speak your language or do everything the way you did it in your country that was so terrible you had to come here. I'll respect you, and treat you the same as anyone else. I don't give a damn if your skin is green, and I can't pronounce your name. I've been here since birth, those of us who have, have our own cultural. You want to come here deal with it. I'm more than happy to have a new neighbor, but show a little respect my way...

I have this argument occasionaly with my GF who was born here, but still seems to think she is Vietnamese... I get tired of hearing "Well, in Asia we..." I'm not in Asia, Mexico, Australia or anywhere else... I'm happy to see things your way, but if I don't want to change why should I be forced to change so that some one can have things just like they were in a coutry that was so terrible they had to come here???

BTW, get me a *******ing Grand Wizard hat... I'll take a black panther hat too, and any other you can think of...

I read in some history book about some immigrants to North America trying to change the Native Americans, who were here first, to be more like them. They were not successful but just killed them of instead (Killing always seems to work). They eventually inhabited the land from coast to coast while doing much damage to other cultures that helped build their new "found" territory.;)

Why are there no Black nor Hispanic cowboys in old American films? ;)

J-150 Sep 30, 2003 06:28 PM

the identification part I agree with totally.

Its when the author states that "we speak english, not "insert language here"

The US was founded by many cultures... not just British slave owners looking for freedom.

The richness of the culture today is a direct result of the many languages and cultures that have added to it. Had pizza or pasta lately? Ever celebrate Oktoberfest? How about that Scandanavian character called Santa? Or Valentine's Day? These are not British at all.

I usually get flamed, but here goes...

:smoke: I too am a several generations down the line American. I believe that if you come here you adapt to our ways, and you learn English.

That said, we Americans do not need to insult those who have come here and though they are trying, cannot speak perfect, idiomatic English. We do not need to bash immigrants, since 95% of us would end up bashing our own family/ancestors. Let's recognize that if we were not in the same "boat" (pardon the pun) ourselves, our grandparents, or great-grandparents were.

Our American culture is an amalgamation of the cultures of our ancestors, overlaid on the freedom that our, yes, Christian, forefathers wanted to give us. Let us be free. At the same time, newcomers, you're the guest now. Adapt.

If I lived in California, I would vote for Arnold. :rocker:
