I just bought a 2006 F350 4X4 longbed, any issues I need to know about it?
ANy nice changes that should be made, more looking for better fuel milage as we use it to tow the 39 foot fifth wheel... |

if its a 6.0 diesel you have head gasket issues and egr are the main 2 problems.
ARP studs fix the head gasket issue (stock studs are crap and stretch) egr you can delete. check powerstroke.org for vendors (dont worry about it until something happens tho, my truck shows no issues with either and as far as i know never had an issues, im at 90k miles atm) |

If it doesn't have them already - get some quality GAUGES! EGT, Tranny & boost are the most common, as you want to be informed as to how your drivetrain is performing - especially towing anything substaintial. As was already mentioned, the .ORG has a ton of good info. Goodluck with it. :thumbsup: |
I believe it is the 6.0 turbo diesel, yesterday it just turned 80,000 miles, and so far, it runs like a champ! Cant even tell we are pulling the fifth wheel....
it does seem fairly slow off the line, then the turbo kicks in and its like a jet taking off! I like that! |
Didn't want to start a new thread but I'm wondering what everyone else is getting as far as MPG? My '06 CC Dually 6.0 which I bought brand new has only 24,000 miles on it and is completely stock.
Driving to the SEMA show from So. Cal. it got 15 mpg without the trailer. That still seems low to me. Buddies have told me they start to improve mileage wise after 30,000; is that true? |
i've been researching the 6.0 vs 7.3. 6.0 if you do anything to it, expect to be addressing some design flaws such as the idea of using 4 bolts per cyl instead of 6 to hold the heads down, which also used TTY bolts that like to let you lift the heads. EGR is a slight issue, not so much anymore now that the fuel quality has been significantly improved for the better for the 6.0. 6.0 also rumored to wear valvetrain much faster. yadda yadda.... lots of info to be read. the route to go seems to be build the motor, tune it and let her breathe... emphasis on the first.
also watch out for low temperature fuel issues. hearing about wax drop out and gelling at higher temps |

Set the cruise at 72 and it's got the 4:10 gear set.

4.10's are hurting your highway MPG a little bit.

Just enjoy the truck and try to ignore the people on this site that put down the diesel trucks. There are many other sites that deal specifically with diesels, such as Power Stroke.Org and Power Stroke Nation and The Diesel Stop where you can get info from people who actually own diesels. Some of the people here do own diesels, but most are just F150 owners who wandered into the wrong forum.

I almost think your talking about me there freeky... All i did was point out things i have found from my research, most of which from first hand owners over at PowerStroke.org (thank you very much). there is many reasons the 6.0 did not last on the production line-up. 7.3 was dropped in favor of more "technological" advances and emissions, mostly emissions.
the fact is the 6.0 has critical design flaws. yes stock it was tuned more aggressive than the 7.3, but once you start trying to get more out of them you quickly get reminded the 6.0 IS higher maintenance than the older 7.3. the 6.0 is more notorious for lifting heads, and ARP addressed this issue with a kit, the flaw is still there. 7.3 used 6 bolts per cylinder to the 6.0 using 4 per cylinder to hold the heads down. I'm slightly confused if you were pointing your finger at someone in this particular thread or not. |
I wasn't talking about you, or anyone else in particular. i just learned a long time ago that this forum is terrible for asking any diesel-related questions. I like coming here to hang out, but any technical issues are usually addressed at one of the previously noted sites. Doing a search on any of those sites will yield many answers from people who have either had an issue or are very familiar with the issue. Diesel fanatics are very serious about their hobby, and I have found that they really don't mind sharing. Most of the information given by people here is hearsay or third party information. People like to take something that they heard and spout it off as fact, and that's how rumors and myths get started.

EGR delete or upgrade the cooler to one form BulletproofDiesel.com Oil cooler(you NEED THIS) Oil screen, while you take oil cooler out, this screen needs to be changed. ADD a COOLANT filtration system, this is why these engines fail Flush the entire cooalnt system with a flush from International, it nuetralizes the acid. Head studs are a MUST! Oil Filter, add 1-2 more spin-offs to your system.. the stock system is horrible yucky anf lets LOTS of particles through right into your high psi pump!!! DONT wait til you start to have problems, get this done now!!! |
