Ball Joint question
 

I have a 2000 F250 PSD with 115k on it and went to get an inpection and they said it needs lower ball jionts, I have a haynes and I'm mechanical incline but in the Haynes it says as of 2007 the 1999-2003 2wd ball joint were not replaceable. Has anyone changed there's out yet and why would they say there not replaceable? thank you.

i know on the f 150 from those years you have to get the whole lower control arm and the ball joint comes already pressed in.

2wd? I have no idea. I know that on our 2002 F-350 2wd Service truck at work they replaced the ball joints. Not sure if your F-250 is set up the same way or not. If the ball joint itself isn't replaceable, then you've gotta replace the whole control arm. Might as well as do ALL of the ball joints while you are in there, cause they're gonna need it soon anyways.

I can find the parts on parts train but I'm not wanting to by them and not have them fit right.

im almost positive its like the 150 where you have to the control arm and ball joint come as one. go to rockauto.com they have a good selection of parts.

Nope... F-250/350 use a twin I-beam front suspension. They are replaceable.

Most of ther guys are correct. The lower ball joint is not replacable and the entire lower control arm needs to be replaced.
And Ford stopped using the twin I-bean suspension in 96. Starting in '97 the front ends (my F-250 4x4 included) are fully independant.
Mine needs new joints too, but these are pressed in.

:confused: Your truck is independent-ish suspension :lol:. My 2000 F-250 4x4 is NOT independent suspension. Super duties (even 2wds) are not fully independent suspension.

The LD trucks did and still do have an IFS suspension, there is no independant-ish about it. Its only a slightly beefed up version of the 8.8 rev cut in the 97-03 F150. Only in 97 and 98 were they referred to as F250 trucks. In 99 they were renamed the F150 7700.


Iggy, these are Superduty trucks which in 4x4 are a live axle up front. Ford kept the TTB axle up through 97 in the F250 HD, and went solid axle in 99 when the SD line was introduced.


Not that any of the above has anything to do with the original question anyhow. FYI the 2wd twin I-beam lower ball joints are replaceable.

yep, mine were replaced at 115k and I did both top and bottom although the bottom ones were the only ones bad.
Costs were roughly $800 for a mechanic to do the work since I don't have time to do it, thought is was well worth the money after looking at the job overall. It was an all day job, probably 2 days for me.

Whooops... I thought he had a 1997 F-250 HD. Didn't read the LD part. I figured he was a TTB truck. :thumbsup:
