F250 V10 Whats reputation?

I'm looking at this 2001 supercab 250 V10. I know nothing about the motor, but have read some older post about the 99 model spark plug problems. I can accept the mpg. Looking for a good deal that has some pulling power, for that occassional 16' lowboy tractor thing. I don't know if I can post this but the truck is about 30 miles from me on EBAY. What should I know about the V10 before considering it.

just my opinion... buy a diesel instead...

It'll be THIRSTY, but other than that, it looks solid. It's never had a gooseneck or 5th wheel installed, and there's no receiver under the bumper. Also, I don't see any holes on the dash from where a brake controller would be installed. Oh, and it's got 3.73 Non-LS gears, which will give you the best mileage.

zaairman, Thanks. I saw the light hook-ups and figured they used the bumper hole for pulling. I think the price is fair and you are correct. For short hauls the taller gear will work for fuel economy. I would prefer the lower gear, but whos picky when the price is right.

Um... I don't think that truck has ever had a ball on the bumper. Go look at it and crawl under the rear end. Betcha you can see where a hitch was once installed. No big deal though. A factory hitch will cost you $240 from Ford. And the truck will do just fine hauling with the 3.73 gears, especially on the highway. My dad's work has a 2003 F-350 CC Dually V-10 with the 4.30LS gears. That sucker gets about 11 MPG UNLOADED.

my dad has an 03' f-250 4x4, crew cab, long bed with 35s on it and he averages 11.5 mpgs. the truck has 60000 miles without one problem. the v-10 is great motor.

My dad has 2 of them. 185K on one, and it has never had a problem, it is an excab short bed with the 3.73's, it gets 15 on the highway unloaded, and 9 whether you have 10k or 3k lbs on it city or highway, dont ask why.

My dad has a 05 F250 with the V10. The truck has never had a problem. Gets around 10-11 mpg.

texaspaul 08-08-2007 03:55 PM

Well, since everyone's dad has one and has had no problems.......and since I'm a dad.........hmmmmm. I guess I shouldn't be too worried about the motor. Ha ha Thanks for the tips guys. I really appreciate it.

my son's dad[me] has an 05' v-10 and the motor is great. unless you are pulling really heavy loads all the time there is nothing wrong with a v-10.:rocker:

It will be fine, most diesel people I know except contractors just buy it because its a status thing

you know, the same kind who buy F150 FX4's and then never ever even engage 4x4, then they trade it in 2 years later

the V10 is a good motor and will save you quite a bit of money up front over the diesel.

My dad has an excursion with the V10 and has never had one problem and the pulling power is effortless.

Octane36 08-12-2007 05:37 PM

The V10 is a good motor. Its a thirsty engine (but what do you expect from a 6.8L engine), but you will never be lacking for power.

I would look for a 3v V10 rather than the older 2v's.

The 2V one will be just fine. Only a new truck will have the 3v but I didnt think it was in his price range
