gas mileage in a 1990-1998 F250 diesel 4x4

Hello there,

I am looking at buying a used f250 or f350 (1990-1998) crew cab 4x4. I am wondering what kind of gas mileage I can expect out of this truck with a diesel? Or the 460 v8? With the automatic vs. a 5 speed?

Thanks,
Wesley

You have way too many variables in there to give an accurate estimate. You are encompasing 3 different engine builds. In 90-93 you could get a 7.3L NA IDI, then in 93 and early 94 you could get a 7.3L turbo IDI, and then in late 94-97 the PSD came out. There was no 98 model year diesel. Anyways the gears will make the biggest difference in the mileage over the trans. Many of the mid 90s trucks came with 4.10 gears which helped for towing, but hurt normal driving. Normal unloaded driving depending on what gears and what engine build you have you may be see anywhere from low teens to up to 20. Towing can be anywhere from less than 10 to mid/upper teens. You will also have to take into consideration that as the truck gets older sensors may not perform as well anymore thus hurting mileage. This is rough ball park figure and without knowing any more specifics its hard to get any closer than that.

The 460 however can get a little more accurate. This will also depend on gearing alot as well. Unloaded expect low/mid teens on a good day. When towing expect less than 10mpg.
